To replace gear oil or not to replace gear oil

    You asked if you should do now (55k) or at 69k. I would change every 30k and just do it at 60k so its on schedule. Chances are the oil is OK in there. A few thousand miles won’t make a difference. Not unless you tow/haul often or off road a lot.

    I didn’t change mine until 60k (also got mine used). The oil was not in bad shape and I had very little metal shavings in the drain hole.

    Change them now. It's good peace of mind and you'll feel like you accomplished something. It will improve your self esteem and you'll do better at work. You'll get more sex and generally be in a better mood.
    Yes, I'd say it's money well spent.
    Then......make a sandwich, but I recommend strawberry preserves.

    No lsd additive. If you want something affordable, go to Walmart and buy Super Tech 75W90 gear oil, it's like $3.79 a Qt.

    3-4 qts is what you need, not sure on your 2nd gen though, others will tell you.

    i believe someone mentioned it would take 8 qts to do all three. front, rear, and transfer.

    I've only ever owned used vehicles and doing a complete baseline is the first thing I do. Maybe maintenance has been done, maybe it hasn't. However if you do a complete fluidectomy, new belts, grease anything with a zerk then there's no question.

    If you have the dealer do the procedure it generally results in an extensive, exploratory cashectomy, though. :)

    that's how it happens sometimes

    I did rear shocks and front brakes on my 99 taco only to find frame had a huge hole in it a few months later.
    That I4 only had one set of plugs in its 180k miles.

    I had a very wise mentor of all thing old and junk tell me about trucks that as you restore or repair them you need to be looking for the one thing, or perhaps a suite of minor things, that don't irritate you. Your truck is like a significant other in that it wants to have an issue to nag you about. So when you find the broken whatever you can live with just stop, put down the spanner and hoist a beer with your buddies.

    Because when you fix that one last thing then something else will break. So it's balancing act. You have to maintain things, so change spark plugs only after you get a cracked windshield. Wait until you get a door ding to fix that. It goes on and on.
