Cross Wind front window noise TSB Update.

Just picked up mine for the cross-wind TSB and an attempt to get them to address the vibration when slowing from 40-20 mph or so. They replaced the door seals. I've not been in conditions to replicate in since, but of course now the drivers door doesn't close properly. The added the steering wheel damper, but insist the drive line is within spec.

There really isn't an alternative to the Tacoma. But there will be one day.

 

That’s how my truck sounds on the highway when there is high cross winds. I rather use your remedy then deal with the potential headache of taking it to the dealer. Can you snap me a pic of where you place the drip lines? What kind of adhesive did you use?

What do you mean by "drip line"..? Is that the line that oozes water out all over..??? OR is it a hose with holes at intervals..?

Just as an fyi a new door seal is only like 45 bucks if you don't wanna mess with the dealer and drip lines. You can find the updated part number in the TSB. Not sure on install but its an option.

 

I did “an” irrigation hose mod, not sure it is “the” irrigation hose (aka drip line) mod, but no heavy winds yet to test it in. When I looked at the bulb seal that runs along the top of the door, from the inside, I saw small regularly spaced holes ... presumably to vent air when the door closes and seal is compressed. I cut a small slit in the hole closest to the back edge of the door, and fed in 1/4” irrigation line which I had lubed up with liquid soap, adding soap when it got tough to push through. I pushed it as far as it would go, up to where the hollow section of the bulb seal ends by the A pillar, then I cut off the end I was pushing from and tucked it in the seal. Door still closes easily but it feels like it should seal better, if this is the source of the noise. Once the hose is tucked in all the way the slit I cut isn’t visible. Unfortunately I usually have to go 100-200 miles from home to the Central Valley or Eastern Sierra to get much wind, so may not be able to test it for a while.

 

I will take a pic when I get a chance. Here is a generic pic to help explain what I did.

At the top corner of the door seal (red box), pull the weather stripping away slightly, toward the inside of the cab (yellow arrow) so there is a small gap to run the drip-line (irrigation tube, etc.). In the gap between the weather stripping and the door, simply run the drip-tubing until the end meets the A-pillar (green arrow). Cut off the excess and repeat one more time to get 2 drip-lines between the weather stripping and the door. Push the top top corner of the door seal back. I didn't need to use any new adhesive at all.

Drip line is just small irrigation tubbing. There are no additional holes in the tube. This is exactly what I bought:

Sup gents (and gentle ladies). Just got back from dealer and was told that my extended warranty didn’t cover replacement of this door seal even after acknowledging that this TSB would apply. I am outside of the window of the basic warranty. Might have to shell out 65 bucks to replace it, but I’ve put in a call to Toyota Corporate to see if they can help. Sucks that they won’t replace it, as it’s happened since I bought the truck brand new. To me, if there’s a new part number for the door seal, then they’ve made a part change, which means the original is susceptible to this defect, which implies a faulty design from day 1. Boom. I’m posting a video of this noise for all to see and hear, and I will keep everyone posted with what Toyota comes back with. My advice is to get this done regardless before your basic warranty expires.

 

Here is the TSB they pulled up for me, with part numbers for aplicable model years. Come on Toyota, make it right.

 

I’m kind of shocked to hear that. I had a TSB done on my second gen way out of warranty. Hopefully corporate will help.

 

Anyone know if installing WeatherTech window deflectors will fix this? I have a 2016 Off Road AC with this issue and am out of the 36k warranty.

 

NO they will blame the window deflectors

 

I suspect that it will solve it, as the noise is created by the rush of air over the door & seal and drawing out ait from the cab..... You would be diverting that up and over and therefore it should fix it..!!

 

Naw man got AVS ones and it still does it. The rubber is just too soft.

 

I purchased the updated TSB door seals (67861-04071 and 67862-04071) from ToyotaPartsDeal.com for $107.10 and it solved my buzzing problem. The updated door seals have the "drip line mod" sort of built into the door seals and were very easy to install. The clips in the door seals are already in the new seals so no worry with the old clips, simply pull out with pliers and don't worry about breaking them. Will need to clean up some factory installed adhesive at top of door and the new door seals have adhesive tabs to pull after getting all clips in. You have to remove the door restraint bolt (10mm) to get the new door seal around it.
I have Weathertech in channel window deflectors which I like but have nothing to do with the buzzing noise.

 

Just a quick follow up. Corporate did help. Got the seals replaced at the dealership, and now awaiting a refund directly from Toyota. Customer service was great.

 

If the reading this forum I called corporate due to the fact that I have 45,000 miles and therefore not on the warranty They gave me a really hard time even though this was documented since day one They finally agreed to a good faith repair if the dealership can verify the noise When I took it to the dealership the service writer couldn’t be bothered and just did the repair under the given case number because he said the technicians will not drive at 75 mph to duplicate noise. After the repair was done three weeks ago I have not heard any more noise.

 

Most shops will not allow technicians to disobey speed limits, etc. I know I always used to tell people that I would not exceed the speed limit to diagnose their noise or whatever it was.

 

I installed AVS low pro in channel visors and it helped quite a bit. NOT perfect but much better.

 

I had a 2017 OR Dbl cab and didn't hear any howling driving or parked , just traded for a 2019 OR DBL cab MFG 10/2018 was walking my dog last night & heard the Howling while it was sitting in my driveway, took it for a drive & no noise we had 30 to 50 winds too.
