Ok, I’m an engineer, but not Toyota’s... but the answer is simple. Effective and cheap. Cheap as in can continue and existing supply chain without redesign.
Someone high up thought changing design wasn’t worth the investment.
Seems fine, Toyota still commands this market and resale.

I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering and worked for Peterbilt (not necessarily in their powertrain dept). But hey, thanks for the strawmen and ad hominem.

FWIW, on the higher end of the spectrum of PB trucks, they use disks.

You should ask those PB engineers why.
I bet you’d get an answer about like this... buyers of those “higher end” trucks want disks.

Why not? They sell parts for both types of systems.

Seems to me you're not very welcoming to adverse opinions / facts.

From the company that sells conversions.

Look, I have no doubt you can engineer disk brakes to have more stopping power than drums on a case by case basis.
Your 579 PB reference was an engineered choice to do that, i just read the press release. To get more stopping power that required a complete platform change.

This is a different application which drums are more than sufficient.

Additionally, there’s no data to indicate these Tacoma conversions increase stopping power, they’re just conversions.

You want more real stopping power, be like me:

Otherwise keep watching commercials for upgrades that don’t really improve much.

I'm predicting a thin black line through the Op's name within the next couple of pages.

Me either. I've designed many disc brake systems. Drums on the rear is just fine for a pickup. One place in life bias is good.

Fun fact: one system I designed had an 84" diameter rotor...

Gee thanks. Why? For wanting legit dialogue about the benefits of disks in the rear or not?

I've owned both a Chevy Colorado with 4 wheel disc and 2 Tacomas. I pull a boat several times a year and throw plenty of heavy stuff in the bed. In my opinion the Tacoma, with the "inferior" drum brakes, stops better in all situations. Real world experience beats science every time.

I'm sure someone else will completely disagree with me any moment now. :crapstorm:

Yeah- no need for boot. I just want a logical debate here.

Here's the truth (queued up). 70-75% of the braking is done in the front, so by that equation, if drum brakes are capable of doing 25-30% of the braking (they are), then rear disks are a waste. He also mentions the other truth, that many people wanting rear disks are in it for cosmetic reasons, i.e. they just look cool.

If you can give me an obvious benefit for discs on the rear of a light duty pickup, I'll gladly concede.

Sure. Heat dissipation and overall protection from off roading "grunge" causing brake issues.
