Search the $250 premium speaker upgrade. Lots of info there. Crutchfield sends you everything you need if you order from them.

    6x9 fronts. 6.5 rears.

I just did it and it sounds really good. Super happy.

I should add if you have JBL upgrading isn't as straightforward.

Use the search feature for “Best stereo uprade for under $250” and find that thread. Other key search words are “kicker” and “tweeter”.

All your questions will be answered there.

    Too much.
    1. What is it you are trying to do?
    2. Any aftermarket door speaker is going to require an adapter for the door. Crutchfield makes this super easy.
    3. The Fronts can take 6x9, and in one case that I know of, an 8" woofer by Kenwwood
    4. Rears can take up to 6.75"
    5. For non-JBL Entune Premium, Kicker has a drop in tweeter that was made for Subaru that works on the 3gen tacoma.

    Thanks everyone.
    Have read a fair amount.
Im aware of the subaru tweeter.
I live in Canada so Crutchfield isnt the easiest option. Was just trying to source out what was needed myself.
I have a warranty rebate at a local electronic shop. Spend $440 get $220 off
I was looking at the Alpine type R speakers.
I just want to upgrade for better sound and add a Jl Stealthbox and amp one day in the future.
    I do not have JBL.

Sometimes a shop will look at putting 6.5" speakers in the fronts as they are still a good size speaker, with good response.

You could get the info off of Crutchfield and take that to your shop. Although, Crutchfield was pretty easy. They sent me all of the adapter mounts, connectors and instructions for free. I will put the Subaru tweeters in the dash, Kicker 6x9's in the front doors and Kicker 6.5's in the rear doors. I don't have the truck yet but have a pile of stuff ready to go in it when it gets here.

I only run round speakers in the front. None in the rear (for sound staging reasons). I've never ran 6x9's in anything I've ever owned. There is always the argument of round vs oval speakers. Ovals give more bass, round give more SQ. For the basic stereo builds you'll never hear the difference. Put in what you like or what works best with your budget.

So, even though you say Crutchfield is a no go, if you enter the truck information on their site, then select the speakers, the site will tell you what you need to make them work, with part numbers, which you can use to source elsewhere

did you do the tweeter upgrade as well?

curious... how does the low end and mixing compare with the new setup vs the factory setup (non JBL 6 speaker system)

I did. The treble can get a little loud. You have to play with the settings. But it's really nice and clear. It has enough bass for my listening. If you turn it way up, it actually has equal the bass I had in my 2nd gen JBL with the sub. But doesn't get distorted. For a couple hundred, it's money well spent. I had stinger fast rings installed also, I don't know what it would have been like without, but there is zero rattling and it's inexpensive.

has everyone had to do this?
    • The front tweeters and the door woofers are wired together at each tweeter location. If you remove or replace the tweeters, you'll have to splice the input and output wires together to keep the woofers working.

I live in Canada and use Crutchfield with no issue. They ship to Canada and the service is great.

If you replace them, purchase the harness from taco tunes for tweeters. It has 4 wires, as does stock. The only thing you will have to do solder the two positive wires and two negative wires into 1 postive and 1 negative wire that then goes to the speaker leads.
