Alright I think I'm pulling the trigger this week. I've talked about it for too long and can't get anyone to trade me theirs. Gonna derp the flares! I've got some days off this week so why not. Small pieces here and there don't bother me but for some reason I'm a p*ssy when it comes to actually coating a big piece of the truck!

So any last minute tips? Tape off a little but not too much, heat the cans in hot water, 3-5 coats. What am I missing?

Man, I dipped my entire truck (last truck not this one). Are you taking the fender flares off or leaving them on??

My biggest suggestion other than what you already said is to use some alcohol and clean the F*ck out of them before you start. This will ensure that every bit of greasy dirt is removed and allow the plasti dip to stick.
The key to plasti dipping is coats. The first coat should be just a light tacky coat about 25% coverage. The rest should be wet coats. Why stop at 5? I'd do more if you have the material.
If left on the truck than it goes without saying mask, mask, mask. That's the key to any paint job.

Go on YouTube and look at DipYourCar

IMO, it seems like the bigger the part, the easier it is.

If it is sunny outside, you don't need the hot water. Just leave the cans in the sun.

Also with my grille, I marked the cans and alternated them as I was doing coats. So, one can has about an hour in the sun to warm up.

From what I've read it seems like leaving them on is the way to go. I've watched a lot of YouTube on it. I forgot about that first coat just getting the stick but now that you mention it that's a great tip! I saw him do it to some wheels if I remember right.

I think you will be alright. Just be sure you get good solid coats especially to the areas that you will peel that weren't masked off and mask the areas you don't want overspray on. Trash bags and newspaper do great.

need to learn more about this stuff
1 can Per flare would be perfect. That’s what I’ve done for wheels in past. I’ve never warmed cans but that seems to be the new thing.
I’d tape off just an inch or so above flare. Then when done you can just peel that inch off since there is a natural break between flare and truck.

100% correct!! Excellent advice and the 1 can per piece is definitely not a bad idea at all. Its a great practice or rule of thumb for wheels absolutely.

Finally got around to pulling and derping the cup holder trim, I used Anthracite Gray and it matches the OEM graphite parts pretty damn close, my guess is that if I had hit it will the clear glossifier it would be pretty spot on!

I wouldn't remove the flares unless you buy new blue/orange clips. They are super fragile

Derped my emblems. First two I didn't apply enough coats and they will need to be redone. But third one was the charm!!! :taco:20180513_213200.jpg

What was your method for not derping the Toyota emblem on your wheels.

He probably popped them off? They are easily removable.

Yep, got bored waiting for someone and popped it off with fingers, no locking clips to break, just got under one area and worked around it.

So just the chrome part pops off, then pops back in?

Yep, has a bunch of tabs, pretty flexible, just work around it in a circle a few times rather than pull one side all the way up and you won't flex/crack it. The material itself seems pretty flexible though.

Jacked this image from another thread, you can see the tab pattern:
