Speaker Upgrade - 2012 DC

Just looking for some opinions (or suggestions) on these replacement speakers before I buy them. After spending some time at Crutchfield's site, this is what I came up with.

Rockford Fosgate Punch P1675-S components for the front and Prime 1675X2 for the rear.

I replaced my HU a few weeks back with a Kenwood DDX375BT. I do not plan on adding an amp at this time.

I'm installing those same speakers tonight. I'm going with a Kenwood DDX6904. My set up is a little different as I'm adding subs and and amps to power the doors and subs. Not crazy power but will be pushing more than the Kenwood by itself.

I'll report back with findings once everything is powered up and kicking.

 

System installed and it kicks! Way better than the factory - like 1,000,000 percent. Ik'm happy with the sound the Rockfords put out. You can certainly do better but I think I got good bang for the buck. Again, I'm pushing them with an amp so they're getting more than enough power.

 

Which amp/sub are you using?

Plan on installing my speakers this weekend.

 

I'd get a small amp, like an alpine power pack or something for those speakers. HU's power output isn't that great and you'll end up using more of the volume knob to push them which will end up distorting them.

 

^^^ What he said.! I'm using this amp to power them - not huge power but they don't need it. Anything past 18 on the volume is absolutely skull crushing in my truck....... Is an amp still suggested to power those speakers? Thanks!

 

I did not add an amp for the door speakers. I have been very happy with them powered by the HU. I did add a sub though, the bass wasn't there with just the door speakers.

Definitely pleased with the setup that I have. Money well spent.

 

They’ll sound better than stock without an amp - waaaayyy better! To get the maximum sound out of them you’ll want an amp - not a requirement though.

 

Couple of questions...Crutchfield lists the tweeters for the Rockford Fosgate Punch speakers as surface mount only. Can anybody clarify on that, do they require major modification to install?

I’m looking at adding a kicker 8” hideaway as well. I would really like to add two of them but I’m concerned about space. I want to mount both in the backseat but don’t want to sacrifice storage space behind the seats. I know under the front seats will work but had planned to put an additional amp there. Does anybody have any other mounting places they’ve used?

 

In my 2015 the RF Punch components fit with the adapter in the door and the tweeter fit with a little bending of the tweeter bracket. I used RF Prime for the rear doors but any Tweeters in the rear doors would have to be surface mounted. If you reset the Crutchfield page to front doors only it will show the RF Punch tweeter will fit with modifications. I can’t speak to your sub question, I used the behind the seat storage.

 

They should supply you with a metal strap that you will need to cut and bend to mount the tweeter to. Here's a picture of what my door looked like after the speaker install.

Thanks guys. Any preferences on HU’s I’ve been looking but there are so many options now it’s a bit overwhelming. I’ve seen a lot of guys in the forum running Pioneer, any particular reason?

 

I’m running a Kenwood excelon and love it. Kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine - all make good stuff. Just figure out what you want most out of a HU. I wanted Apple car play - started my search there. Didn’t need NAV so that wasn’t a requirement. You get the idea.... Crutchfield is the place to go IMO.

 

I have the Kenwood DDX375BT. I did not need carplay or HD radio so I went with the cheapest option. I considered Pioneer, but they did not support iDatalink Maestro.

Is the maestro worth it? I was looking at it the other night. I was interested in it for pulling up the OBDII data in real-time.

 

I think it is - I added it to my set up and can get trans temp, etc..... Don;t use it that much but I've only had the new set up a month or so - Haven't done any towing or long road trips but I'm sure I'll put it to use.

 

It’s a cool feature. I like being able to see the tire pressure. Although I haven’t set the tire to the correct location yet. If I was an auto trans I would definitely use the transmission temp.

 

I think you’ve talked me into it. One more thing to add to the HU want list. Are you happy with the punch speakers?
