And if you really feel the brakes aren't enough upgrade the front as you'll get way more upgraded braking there than if you did rear disk

May as well throw my input in here. I don't think its a matter of "Disk vs Drum" but rather what is set up correctly on the vehicle. Ive had/have vehicles with both configurations, and both have pros & cons. My Dodge has Disk/Disk brakes, as does my Jeep. Neither will stop shorter than my Tacoma did. Not even close. A lot of folks think the rear drum brakes on the Tacoma are "silly", but they also seem to forget that the Tacoma has 4 piston front calipers. FOUR PISTON FRONT CALIPERS! What truck has that? What car??? The Tacoma has most always had the Best in Class stopping power with its Disk/Drum set up, so......why should they increase cost?

Toyota rep at cabelas (one of those free test drive deals) in virginia said drums are on tacomas because they are better offroad and because of fuel mileage constraints from the gov. By 2030 they have to get like 30 mpg or something. Anyway, drum brakes can be adjusted so that when the brakes are not applied, the pads don't touch the drums so there is no drag. On a disc set up, there is always a tiny bit of drag no matter what. The reason they don't use them on a steer axle is becuase of the extra spinning weight of the drum caused too much feed back in the light weight rack and pinion style steering system.

Just so yall know, all hiluxs are set up the exact same way. The 70 series cruisers have all 4 disc brakes. So who knows

So what I want all yall to take from this is

BREMBO is the undisputed global leader in the production of breaking systems, makes FOUR PISTON CALIPERS. The reason being is Toyota Tacoma has the same system front calipers speaks for itself.

If fuel econ was the reason, the "extra spinning weight" would be more of a penalty than any pad drag. They use them because they work just fine, and are less expensive.

Disk vs drums? I dont care either way, as long as it stops well in all driving conditions, and it didn’t add a few more grand in cost to the vehicle.

Amsoil doesn't do oil analysis. They'll send it out to independent labs (more than one) and then posts those results. If testing is required, they'll follow ASTM standards. Apples to Apples.

This has been a fun thread.

Personally, I'd rather spend the money on upgrading to a front end BBK than worry about the rear braking mechanism. But that's my own feeling, to each their own. And there are many other upgrades that are higher on my priority list than anything to do with my braking system at this point in time.

I'm sure you would need a brake booster upgrade to properly power the rear discs. That is more $$$

I like having drums in the rear because they work well, are easy to rebuild, and frankly for single stops are almost certainly more powerful than the sliding-piston calipers that you would have to use for the semi-floated axles on these trucks

the reason Toyota put them on the Tacoma is because they're plenty good for the application, no more no less

I swear I've seen this thread forty five times and I have never seen anybody offer a convincing explanation for why they think they need rear discs

I love these threads. Folks complaining what isn't on a $40k truck. So, Toyota adds rear disks for another $500, power seats for $500, full opening rear window for $500, higher tow rating for $500, etc. All of a sudden, it's up to $43k - $45k. What's the complaint then? Why do I have to pay for a $45k mid-size truck? Or, that there is only 6 or 8 way power seats when 11 way are what is necessary?

In the end, I don't hear owners complaining about resale value.

Back to the OP's question "Is there a rear disk brake upgrade?" Answer: Yes there is.
My input: Is it worth spending $1,000 to do it? Answer: No
