could it be a relay, or a loose connection? how hard is it to get to the back of the AC to check?
    any advice would be appreciated.

Blower motor is probably going out. My dad has this problem on his 2005 Tacoma, and finds it cheaper to just bang on it than replace the motor.

Two screws below the glove box will give access to the blower motor and connector. Super easy.

Cheaper than just banging on it? ;)

My dad's a 100% OEM guy and they want like $150. Percussive maintenance it is...

Sounds like you have a short or lose connection. The blower motor is right under the glove box and is easy to get to, all the wireing is behind the dash. Does the blower motor only not worl when you turn the ac on or does it do the same thing with heat and running it on cool with ac off

it would seem to only be the blower motor cutting out, but being i'm hitting the top center of the dash to get it to go back on makes me thing that it's a connection higher up, behind the controls that then continue and terminate at the motor. how hard is it to get to the back of the controls of the AC?

The relay is in the fuse box in the engine bay so it isnt that, only control that might be messed up is you fan speed switch. So to get to that requires pulling the trim off to pull that out.

Ugh, my fan speed switch might be bad, too. I have only 3 of the 4 speeds. Second highest just blows low.

I've now noticed that position 1 and 2 are working on mine, and 3 and 4 will kill the fan. I'll slide the switch back to 1 or 2, and it stays dead until i hit the dash. i might eventually spray some contact cleaner into the switch, and give it some exercise. I'll let ya know how it goes.

I've burnt both now, fan switch and blower motor speed resistor. The resistor is more common when just a speed or two go out

I lost all my speeds except low and a new resistor got me two speeds back. I figured it was a faulty resistor because the resistance did not match the specs printed in the factory service manual, but I tried a second replacement and got the same results. Tried a new blower motor with no success, so the only thing left is to try the switch.

I have a similar issue with my blower motor in my 02 Tacoma. The fan will stop blowing but if I tap on it or just slightly kick it underneath the glove box on the passenger side it will come back on. It also makes a loud rattling noise when it's on. Also, when I have my A/C on it will all of a sudden stop blowing cold air, the fan will still be on but it will switch to hot air. The way I fix this to go back to cold air is I push on the thermostat dial. I will kind of just move the knob from side to side and then the cold air will come back on. I'm not sure why this works but it does.
I'm not sure how to get all of this fixed. I know I'll need a new blower motor but I'm not sure how to fix the AC from turning hot. I haven't had my whole A/C system checked yet but I'm hoping I can just fix this on my own.
