lol no shit. I have to use a 4x4 block with a jack to get Frank up on jack stands...and the jack stands are on 4x4 blocks too haha

Five tire rotation for me as well. Spare to passenger rear; passenger rear to passenger front; passenger front to driver rear; driver rear to driver front; driver front to spare.

The idea of having two new tires would only work for your first flat - at that point, whatever tire ended up being your spare would no longer be new... and so you'd have to change your methodology (well, I guess depending on how used it was)

I used it for a while, and it worked; just a bit sketchy and you had to make sure you built a solid platform for it.

I hear ya lol, I have to use a combo of jacks and then wheels have to come off to fully rest and droop on jack stands. If I dont have the jack stands all the way up the jack gets stuck under the axle lol

 

replaced the fan clutch.... errr I mean the 'Fluid Coupling'

Oh I hear ya. I stack red pavers under mine. I ended up making a set of tall ones. I want to make another set but I’ve been to lazy

 

I just use my hi-lift (unless I'm at home and have access to my floor jack). Hi Lift stays bolted to my bed rack so it's my go-to jack if I'm out somewhere. Just keep it well oiled...I've seen more than one Hi-Lift fail because the person that it belonged to never oiled it. I spray mine down with Tri-Flo before each use and it's never dropped my truck, used it countless times before I had a floor jack at home.

Problem with my floor jack is that it's not even high enough, need an extension for it (if they make one..?). Works well to lift the rear by the pumpkin but I have to use the front skid plate to lift the front, which makes me a little uneasy. I've also used the LCAs as a jack point but the floor jack is a little tricky to fit under there safely. But that works really well to get a tire off the ground if you're only needing to do one side.

Why not put the jack on the axle in this situation? That way you aren't drooping out your suspension.

I keep the stock bottle jack for just that, it's usually easier than letting the rear droop out with a hi-lift. If I had to do it off the frame, I would find a way to strap the axle such that it doesn't droop out.

Front's not an issue with the hi lift.

Yes, cost and useful tread life. The leading edge of the tread blocks wears more quickly than the trailing edge, so reversing the direction of rotation evens that out, and the shoulders of the front tires wear more quickly than the rears, so switching back to front keeps those even.

For example, my MTRs can probably go 40k miles (if I’m lucky). By adding in a 5th tire to my rotation, I should be able to get (5/4)*40k = 50k miles before I need all new tires.

 

Lack of experience at the time is my only excuse.

Yes, I have a sweet graphic on my computer of the pattern that I will share when I get home. I think it is similar to what @turbodb described.

 

The other Dan's rotation is the standard 5 tire rotate but does not ensure the rolling direction is swapped on all tires each time. In his, some tires do 2 stints in a row rolling in a given direction.

 

Every single time using a hi-lift is sketchy IMO. Makes the bottle jack look way safer in most situations, but they sure are handy.

Useful tool, but always exercise caution. Make sure to have a can of WD-40 or something around too. Mine likes to not go down unless you give it a little spray.
