DOM is the upgraded steel. That's what I got and have been pretty rough on them and there isn't any damage. Just lots of scrapes. Kind of wish I went with bolt on because now I am selling the truck and they are going with it which makes me a little bummed

Yeah, I had a guy weld them on for me. It's not as simple as just putting them up to the Tacoma and welding them on.

x2 on the 4x innovations but for a 1st gen. As long as you know a welder I wouldn't have an issue with them, unless you don't plan on keeping the truck

I think he did that as an excuse to build and wreck stuff. Not that there's anything wrong with that, dropping trucks on their sliders is probably a shit load of fun.

But all this mental masturbation and destructive testing is pointless, just refer to standards. Per ASTM A513 in 1020 grade as-welded HREW has yield of 38 ksi and as-drawn 1020 DOM has yield of 60 ksi. Big surprise, cold working steel raises it's yield strength.

So assuming you use the same grade (which is really important to know), diameter and wall thickness, if your DOM slider wasn't stronger it would mean you have variance in your geometry, workmanship or testing.

Shit changes year to year. When I was at TotW, I made it within I think half a mile or so of the end before getting to ledges that I *could* have made it up, but would have taken more time and effort going up and getting back down than was worth it, plus having never run it I wasn't sure if it got worse (and of course, no armor). I never really identified the 'loop', since we hiked up from those ledges and back to the vehicle, and I never saw the split before that. There were a couple of places that were somewhat gnarly, and I have to wonder if maybe someone went up the back and not the front or vice versa.

The trail condition could have been vastly different too. One trip out there I tried to take the fork out to the bottom of Gemini Bridges. Came to a point where there was an exposed boulder that the trail went over which was basically a 2.5' ledge at the time. Again, lacking armor or the approach angles, I turned around. Came a back a few years later, had the other party wait up the trail while I went to investigate. Trail maintenance had reburied the boulder, I drove over it without even noticing. Just got far enough down I was like, 'it had to be before this', and only spotted it on my way back up to get the other party.

Could also just be comfort and skill level. I'm no expert (was even less so at the time, believe that was during my first significant trip after getting the truck), and I'm sure someone else could have done it stock with no damage.
