Hmm, learn something new every day. I don't think I've ever even seen 85 octane but I'm also at sea level on the east coast.

I'm at 4k ft and I don't see it here either. Last time I remember seeing it, I was up in the Eastern Sierras at Mammoth, over 8k ft. As for learning something new, I didn't learn it til maybe a month ago lol it's all good

This tunes sounds awesome and I've been trying to purchase a hardware kit for a few months now. Could seriously use some help from some of you guys. Tried emailing this to Matt @OVTune but his site is down for construction.

Active duty military. Between returning from a deployment and a handful of schools, I keep missing the windows to order the hardware kit from OVTune. Would love to pre-order/back-order and have no problem waiting however long it takes. I take off this weekend for at least three weeks in the woods. Anyone willing to help me get my hands on a kit?

    I promise I'm not a Nigerian Prince.

He's in the process of moving right now, and then he's out of the country until July 10, so kits won't be back in stock until you come back out of the woods anyway.

I'm stuck in the same boat as many on here. Got my kit today but new instructions are not available and the flash manager link from the old instructions is dead. Was anyone able to flash with the new kit?

I really wouldn't just go ahead and run 85 in a tune meant for 87, regardless of the atmospheric pressure... especially on a DI engine, with much higher compression than a strictly port injected vehicle.

    From fueleconomy.gov

What is 85 octane, and is it safe to use in my vehicle?
The sale of 85 octane fuel was originally allowed in high-elevation regions—where the barometric pressure is lower—because it was cheaper and because most carbureted engines tolerated it fairly well. This is not true for modern gasoline engines. So, unless you have an older vehicle with a carbureted engine, you should use the manufacturer-recommended fuel for your vehicle, even where 85 octane fuel is available.

For what it's worth, 85-87 octane is what Toyota lists as appropriate. Mat didn't remove the capability to run 85oct with the 87 map. Hell, I don't have 87 where I'm at, I have 86. Runs just fine for me. However, it's still true that it's simply better to run higher octane, as evidenced by the knock discoveries.

Just because the stock map is food for 85-87 does that automatically mean that a 3rd party map made for 87 still works with 85? I've read this whole thread and so far no mention of using 85 specifically, you would think he'd call that out.

He has said dont run 87 while on the 91 map, that is 4 octane points... so running 85 on 87 is half of that, still think it's a good idea? Like you said, preferable to run higher octane anyway. I'm not saying itll blow up right away, but specifically with a tune called "87", I wouldn't be rushing to save a little at the pump.

I hear you, I just don't know if he's advanced timing enough, or at all, to matter for the lower octane map. From what I understand, he didn't add power, just changed how it presents, how it's accessed, as evidenced by the improved lower end drivability. I'm not an expert by any means, but wouldn't that suggest that the ability to run 85oct wasn't compromised?

Ah well I can definitely get behind that if he didn't add power. Maybe he can answer this better

Only option. I live in Utah, high elevation around 4k where 2i live, and 87 is a unicorn. I'm not mixing on purpose, since I have 92 in the tank right now, I have to let it run out first before I can compare it to the 91 file :)

If memory serves, Matt did specifically say 85 gas is fine on his 87 file.

@Comb Thanks for the info. I'll see about getting a kit in late June/early July and hope for the best.

Ha ha, the Alpha thread is now discussing the desire to manually shift gears. My truck does that just fine.
