The tamron he posted can go for $1,100
The canon version I mentioned is just about $2,000.
My friend and I split costs for the lens for a week which was $85.

Thanks! It was fun to catch them and see all these folks go crazy in the jungle!

Sho did! I was the idiot in the stupid had and sleeves running through the jungle and yelling obscenities from the basket during the group shot.

I also love that range. I was pitting the Tamron against the Nikon comparable lens and, at the time, the Tamron was the only one with stabilization (must have for old wobbly dudes like me for free-hand night shots). Furthermore, it was right around the time Tamron was stepping out of the budget glass class and up to the big leagues with their lenses. Now I'm swooning over the sigma art series, but I'm out of money for gear :(.

Good lenses range WILDLY in prices. It all depends what you want to do with them. Typically the "holy trinity" lenses (15-30 or comparable, 24-70 and 70-200) in F2.8 range from $1000 and up depending on brand and class. The used market, however, is typically pretty live, so you can find a lot there, but be careful.

@IllTrucko oh I consistently hover over the fuck it mouse adding the arts to my shopping cart. But I hold myself back lol.
Shooting canon, if I ever buy any L glass itll be the 16-35 2.8 is iii.....maybe when the trucks built and paid off .
I've been pretty happy with my tamron 70-300 3.5-5 with is. Most my shots from jambo were on it. It's either super wide or telephoto for me, lol.

@Taco16Jessy I have a Nikkor 70-300 that I absolutely adore. One of my oldest and still most solid lenses. I used it almost exclusively during the stampede. It's a fucking tack sharp beast if you can figure out how to nail focus and get your settings right for the day/lighting. Unfortunately, it suuuuuuucks for the trails unless it's a strait shot and you can shoot down the pipe.

Example: Just a screen cap, but I get to be far away and still capture the action up close, sharp as if I was in the danger zone (queue the music, you know you hear it now...)

Man. Expensive hobby. I never understood how yall can take pictures and then adjust them on the computer, and they come out sharper than what I originally saw with my own eyes. It makes no sense. I have great vision. Is it cause the lens is bigger than my 1/4 " wide retina?

It's actually cheaper than a wheeling and modding truck hobby. The glass lasts nearly forever, and just update your camera body every 5ish years.

the lenses have beyond perfect vision. Yes you can edit the photos and enhance sharpness and clarity, but I often don't bother unless I'm using a cheaper lens that has too much chromatic aberration ruining the photo. These new cameras are awesome for auto focus. 20 years ago the photo will be as sharp as you focus the camera by hand. So if you vision is off like mine, any manual focus photos I have are never sharp.
Inside a a lens, how many pieces of glass are being used to create those photos.

The tamron does pretty well fully extended too. This is shot at nearly the 300mm and looks pretty darn sharp to me. All i had to adjust was shadow/highlights a tinge. Unless you're on wide open trails I believe it. I was running near the beginning of our group, so I'd have to run out with my lens and could only fire a few shots before they got too close.

I've never been good at micro adjusting my focus in the camera. My right eye, shooting eye, has an astigmatism and even corrected still isn't great, lol. I should prolly take my gear into the store and get it cleaned and adjusted. I swear I have some dirt in my view finder too.

The Tamrons do AWESOME but I am abusive with my gear so the glass lasting forever is kinda subjective LOL. Example from Jambo; I ate shit running around on the muddy trails several times. One of those times, my camera was in my hand with the 15-30 on there (lens is 2.4lbs alone). Camera and lens took a dirt dive, but came out ok. It happend a couple years back and I needed to shoot (preferably with it) again a few days later, so warranty turnaround was out of the question. I, in my infinite freakin' wizdumb, took matters into my own hands to figure out what was wrong. Symptoms were the zoom ring locking up and eventually freezing completely to 25mm. So.... yeah....Buckle up and let me show you how an idiot lives for a moment.

    upload_2018-5-19_13-21-44.jpg

After finding the issue, I was able to assemble it and fire some test pattern shots to make sure sharpness matched before I messed with it and sure enough, the thing has been working like a champ ever since (about two years now).

    Ok </story time> sorry, haha
