Have you called DenCol, Altitude, Ryerson, maybe Rio Grande?

    Have you ever specified a steel beam? It's confusing. You'd think S3x7.5 would mean a 3" wide by 7.5" tall but it's really a 3" deep by 7.5 lb/ft. So you get a beam that will have h = 3", W=2.509" and S=0.349".

Yeah try k&k surplus. In the scrap yard. How much weight are you trying to carry? What are you using as a hoist? Winch, come along, pulley system?

Hopefully if he's going to the trouble of using a steel beam he's hanging a proper trolley on it, too. Otherwise 3 sistered 2x10s between the rafters is a lot easier.

This is somthing i have not done but when searching have come to realize this! Its a different language when it comes to sizing.

Called altitude guy was going to check stock and call back. Dencol kind of pissed me off. Was looking to see if i am even looking in the right places.

I’m thinking weight and being top heavy. Thinking thick tube would be easier but he has a goal in mind so I’m curious what brewing in his head. Plus on rafters isn’t very portable. Pretty sure he’ll want to be able to move it around.

Not that I would necessarily trust it, but Harbor Freight sells a portable gantry with a trolley.

Ill take a look, not more than 600-800 lbs i need a new hoist for my RTT. Father is stealing my other one. Pondering ideas what would work best. I got alot of verical storage. house i bought has 13’ ceilings. My other thought is storing my camper shell when i want to remove it for somthing. Would take the other hoist ,but ceiling is to high to operate it!
    image.jpg
I was looking at trolley so i can move the tent front or back of the garage. But i am kind of just pondering ideas. This might be more trouble than its worth/ over kill.

I know my idea all depend on how my roof is supported and if the joist can handle it!

Oh Yeah, I was thinking if you had a tandem 3 car garage it wouldn't be an issue.
