I'm just going to import a de-badged Hilux. Customs will never know.

Just an FYI, Toyota diesels are incredibly long lasting. There are completely original diesels that you can import from places like Australia and Japan from over 30 years ago that run and drive like new with no problems at all. Also, there is a diesel Tacoma... It's only in Australia though...

This is why Toyota will never bring it to the states. They're not going to compromise integrity and reputation for a very small American market

Looked at one of those 35k for a 1993 fj 79 series landcruiser. Or 14k to purchase a complete front clip from a Hilux and modify my truck.

How would that compromise their intergity and reputation by bringing a very reliable and long lasting engine to the states? I mean it's not going to pass any American emissions but I think they can design a new one if they are given time and don't push out a turd and "polish" it like they did with the 3rd gen power train

That's the thing, it's a land cruiser. They are known all around the world for being some of the most reliable cars and trucks ever. They're also toyotas premier high end off roader

They have the Hylux in Europe. They have the same diesel emissions as us.

It's a compromise of integrity and reliability because they would have to derate and add so much to this engine to meet emissions. Thus making it worthless. Having worked with an entirely new diesel engine design, it's a lot harder and more expensive to design an engine that meets emissions and that's in the AG and off the road industry where emission standards are lower than for automobiles. It would not be very profitable for Toyota to develop another diesel engine that would really only be sold in America and Canada and how many would realistic be sold annually? I don't think I could justify it from an engineerinh perspective or from a business case.

Europe does not have the same emissions standards.

Can I just get touch to enter on both sides of the vehicle first and power lock tail gates first? I’m having to do all this on my own, shit my truck is an ‘18 but it’s already looking like a ‘19 or ‘20 lol

Not sure about vehicles but heavy equipment they DO. Euro tier 4 emissions is the same as ours.

I wanted a diesel for a bit, but then I realized I don't tow, I'd be limited in gas stations, fuel is more expensive, the diesel option in any new truck is a lot more upfront cost, repair costs are (generally) a lot more, they are generally slower than gas counterparts, and it would take so long to pay off the investment in gas mileage. But I guess I could have "rolled coal" as they say, so there's that.

With diesel running about 40 cent a gallon above regular, you better do some math if you think you're gonna save money on fuel.

And more math if you think the TCO will be lower.

As far as lasting, say 500k, vs a gas 300k, big deal. The percentage of owners who would keep a truck that long won't blip on Toyotas radar.

Plus it's likely the frame would rust out first, at least for the snow bunnies.:D

Really the only benefit would be towing, I've noticed diesels don't usually have a big drop off in MPGs when you tow heavy loads. But then if you are towing heavy loads a lot, you probably shouldn't get a Tacoma.

Add in the cost of DEF to "fuel" costs. This is something a lot of people forget.
