Then why is it advertised as a 3in lift? 1in of preload does not equal a 3in lift

Yeah but to pay so much for this suspension and have it not ride smooth is just disappointing

I’ll probably do less preload. I don’t really plan on adding more weight anytime soon to the front. I will eventually add a winch but for now I’ll just lower them a bit and see how it rides. your Tacoma looks sick btw!

preload does not equal lift, it isn't a 1:1 ratio because the arm is a lever. Also icons have 13" coils stock so you're really closer to 1" of preload, if you backed it off an inch it would be slack

My bumper is a pelfreybilt aluminum and on their site they state 650lb coils are recommended for their aluminum bumpers & thats what my icons have so no I highly doubt the bumper is making them my truck sag. I don’t feel or see any difference with the bumper

I do plan on buying kings and then reselling the icons IF I can’t make these work to my liking

A 650lb coil is a 650lb coil regardless of length, length will affect coilbind and wait for it.... length.. that's it

I haven’t moved the preload on my icons since I purchased the bumper. It’s been sitting like that for a couple of months

If I knew I would have definitely spent the extra $$ for Kings. I’m not bashing icon I’m just letting others know if they want a Cadillac type of ride then they gotta look elsewhere. It’s an honest review.

Just curious OP, did you get those new wheels and tires at the same time ? Because a harsh road feel is far more a symptom of a load range E tire than your coil overs

650lb means it takes 650lb of force to compress it one inch, both will feel the same until they bottom. I understand what you're visualizing in your head but it isn't correct.

It's also worth noting that the first 1" of threads you're referring to as preload on the 13" is just free space because the coil is shorter.

Ah, I see where the confusion is now, you've got two things filed as one here and I get it as it isn't an easy thing to put together without some force gauges and experience. Yes, 5100s preload the shit out of stock or aftermarket coilovers as you move them up, but you know what won't fix that longer coils, stronger coils will though. You went to a stronger coil, if you compress a coil past its limit it will become jarring but that's on you for picking a poor coil, 700lb is what you needed and I bet if you put on a 13" 700lb coil it would feel exactly the same. It doesn't need less "preload" because up until you start using those threads to further compress the coil it isn't preload, it's just an adjustable spring seat. It becomes preload when you begin to compress the spring with it. There is an inch difference in free height between a 13 and 14 inch coil so yess if I use your definition of preload it would look like it requires and inch more preload, but it doesn't because that's not what preload is. ya dig?

I lowered the coils so now I have 1 1/4 thread showing on the passenger side & 1 1/2 thread showing on the driver side. I’ll be getting an alignment and see how it rides.

These springs are linear. It doesn't matter if you have 1" to compress or 50" to compress. 650lb per inch spring means it's resistance is 650lb per inch. A 13" spring compressed 1" or a 14" spring compressed 2" doesn't change the 650lb of force needed to compress it 1". Just like a 13" spring compressed 2" or a 14" spring compressed 1" doesn't change the 650lb of force needed to compress it 1".
I think on TW, the phrase "pre-load" gets thrown around way too much & incorrectly.

Mine DO ride like a Cadillac. I have nearly the same set up as you.

Perhaps having Dakar leaf springs out back vs. 2014 OEM leafs make it feel very different?

I am certain any shocks with a 600lb coil will feel softer, vs Icon 650lb. Of course shock valving will be different too. Keep in mind, OEM spring is only 540lbs. Best of luck either way.
