Ain’t going to happen. The diesel emission standards for the United States are ridiculously expensive to comply with. Look what happened to VW and consider Toyota’s response to that .
I hate the way that current diesels with emmisions sound. Like a bad exhuast leak or a prolonged fart.
Seriously new super duties sound like something is seriously wrong.

You know that's what is said on every forum about diesels. I bet if you add up all the various niche groups you would get a pretty sizable market. GM can't keep up with demand on the diesel option, so it's apparently more popular (and profitable, otherwise you know it wouldn't happen otherwise) than stick shifts at least.

Fans of diesel trucks hoping that the 2016 Toyota Tacoma might finally be the year one comes are going to be disappointed yet again. This week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Toyota’s Chief engineer for the Tacoma and Tundra explained in plain English why the company does not plan to offer a Tacoma diesel.

    No Diesel 2016 Tacoma
At NIAS Automobile’s Mark Nordeloos did the interview that made it all crystal clear. Interviewing Toyota’s Mike Sweers, he asked, “What is Toyota’s stance on diesel engines for the U.S. pickup truck market?” Rather than dodge the question or leave it vague so that Tacoma owners can continue to pine away for a diesel, Sweers said “The difficulty with the diesel is LEV III [emissions standards]. The difficulty is the cost-to-benefit relationship. Everybody loves diesel in trucks. The downside is the after-treatment systems can add $3,000 or more. It starts becoming cost prohibitive, especially in this segment, to pay a premium for both the engine and after-treatment system. That’s the struggle we have. We build a lot of diesel trucks, just not in this country. If I develop a diesel system for our country and I spend a huge amount of money to do that, I won’t see a return on the investment. That’s what we’ve struggled with.”

i cant see why they wouldnt make it toyota would become Rich as F@#K they would be on top of the world with all the problems with diesel vehicles and with the current gen tacoma's being to much money as it is but people still buy them i bet the Diesel Tacoma would cost like 65-80k and people would still buy it

If it cost over $50k why would people buy it? For that price you can get a Ram or Ford or Chevy which has more history with diesels.

You know Toyota has sold diesels globally since 1960s, right? The Land Cruiser first got a diesel in 1974, the BJ40, and has many very reliable (although slow) engines. The ones they sell now are V8 diesel, the 1VD-FTV, and supposed to be pretty good. They even sold diesel Corollas and Pickups for a few years in the mid 1980s here. Those used the 2L diesel engines.

Yes but those diesels have not gone through all of the emissions tier levels that the big three have. They would have to design a new engine from the oil pan up, no way around it. That project would cost at least $500 million. I've been involved in these type of engine developments, it's incredibly expensive.

i think he would see a return on the investment

just for the simple fact that Tacoma already cost close to some of the gmc ford chevy dogde full sizes and they already sell
and with the number of people that would love a diesel Tacoma i think they could put what ever ridiculously high price tag on it and it would sell

scratch that ....with all the recalls this truck faces year after year with a diesel they would go bankrupt the 1st year they'd produce the 2019 diesel

Just Euro 5 and the now Euro 6 standards in Europe, which are tough but more realistic for diesel considering they account for better efficiency (e.g. better fuel economy offsets emissions in the calculation). Australia is adopting Euro 5 basically and Japan has very tough emissions, too. Theirs came in before the U.S. EPA by a decade I think. Toyota isn't building smoke belching diesels, they are very advanced. It's that our emissions rules are unique and biased against diesel more than the rest of the world.

Our [America's] diesel standards are much higher than every where else.

Is it me or what but I don’t understand the obsession over a diesel Tacoma. I’ve had a diesel ford pick up it was nice and expensive and it towed my 50ft boat but that was about it.

Sorry your math is way off. If you average 20mpg to make math easy, 50 gallons fuel to 1 gallon of def you'd have to drive 25k miles in a month to spend $150 in def.

Edit: I have had a few whiskeys though, so please check my math lol.

    By comparison...

The 2019 Silverado is getting an optional turbocharged 4-banger that still gets more horsepower and torque than our Tacos, and my guess is that Toyota will go THAT direction before they go diesel.

I could see a Tacoma with little smaller motor with high horsepower and torque that gets good mileage...but I don’t know if this site could survive all the members getting banned over discussion of it.

It better have disk brakes though.

I’ll admit I’d like to have a sequential dipstick for my tacoma.
