Struggling to cruise on highway with SSP. Will OVTune help?

My truck is fun/comfortable to drive in the city and on back roads where the speed limit is 80 km/h (50 mph), but taking it on the highway and trying to maintain 110 km/h (68 mph) is an absolute battle. In order to maintain 110 I have to stay in 5th (which is fine), but I have to be laying into the pedal extremely hard, which destroys the mileage (15 l/100km, 15mpg).

The SSP helps, but I find that this issue is getting worse over time. I will be taking it into the dealership to have them look at it. Not sure if it's an engine issue or what.

Will the OVTune help alleviate the issue of the truck being unbearably gutless on the highway? (I keep it in 5th with the SSP). When I floor it, it picks up decently quick, and the throttle response of ECT helps (although the increased throttle response from ECT is almost gone now, not sure why), but overall just cruising at highway speeds is a pretty frustrating experience.

I commute with a work van, however there's the potential for me to start commuting with my truck every day (2.5-3 hours a day), and there's 0 chance I'll be able to tolerate it the way it is.

    Thanks.

Hmmm. I don’t have SSP, and recently drove cross-country in 6th gear getting better than 23 mpg in my TRD Sport DCLB (by comparison, and nice choose BTW).

What’s the SSP really doing for you? I don’t find the truck gutless, but I don’t expect it to be a rocket out the gate. When I need to pass someone or get the hell out of Dodge she scoots (after a minute hesitation).

Are you dealing with high winds or hills? I know my truck HATES headwinds and going up. She’s happy flat, level, and calm. At 110 kph, though, you should be in the low end of 6th with no effort.

The SSP is to help manage the shifting points in the city -- the truck feels much more alive, and will shift into gear at certain speeds (ie. 4th at 50, 5th at 80) which keeps the power more consistent. On the highway, it keeps me out of 6th, which is just completely pointless because I cannot stay in 6th no matter what speed I'm going, or what the road is like.

I feel as though there may be something wrong with my truck? I'll take it in for a service and see what they find. I'm on the newest tranny TSB.

Well, it is a learning transmission. Maybe the SSP has “taught” the tranny to stay in 5th? Dunno, just throwing that out there.

Sorry, I meant to say that 6th gear is completely pointless. I like that the SSP keeps me in 5th.

I live in 6th, so I simply can’t relate. Must be a Texas thing - the only thing bigger is Canada. ;)

Good luck figuring your problem out.

As soon as I get over 73 on the highway my truck drops into 5th like clockwork. It'd be nice to cruise at 75 in 6th with just a little more gas, but the throttle software won't let me. This is why I'm considering the OV Tune.

Website is down for right now though, I think.

I have my ssp set at level 3 and have no issues holding 70 or 80, and 60 is even better if I want to save some gas.

    Gluck at the dealer.

We only count livable area. Pretty sure that 80% of Alaskan real estate is trying to kill you.

I had ssp and no ovtune and i cruise 80mph no issues. I absolutely love it and its power and im even running the 87 tune. This will 100% fix that issue. Sell ssp for 125$ apply to tune and be done

I have SSP on 265/75/16 which are a little bit bigger then stock tires and it will jump between 5th and 6th on the highway at 110 km/h. I found SSP was pointless on highway i just put the truck into drive when i go over 80 km/h. Any sort of headwind i am guaranteed to be sitting in 5th gear the entire time.

15L/100k I find is high for maintaining just 110 km/h.

With a roofrack, sliders, ko2s and winch bumper i am still getting 13.5 to 14

What size tires are you running?

Drove buffalo to the Adirondacks this weekend in nys. 18 limited. Cruise (not radar) set at 80 mph. Head wind. Shifts back and forth. Holds speed no problem. Average 19.8 mpg. Get 22 at 65 mph easily. Have seen 26 something at 55 to 60 .

And there's Alaska; if you made two states of Alaska Texas would be the 3rd largest state
