Winch sinch was a success today with soft shackle DIY 2.0

Learned this is the proper orientation of load on a soft shackle

After the pull.. Everything held and looks good.

Never paid attention to shackle orientation before. I will now. Thanks!

I tried to get cute with my first attempt. I buried the one loose end inside the cable, and made a mess of the ball knot. But it works so fuck it.

Ignore the aluminum angle . Failed bend test due to lack of fusion. But at least I didn't melt the edge off. Back to practice I go. Weld looked decent though.received_10211957465793007.jpg

For tying a button knot, setting the shackle I’m going with a “button up” reference which will remind me to put one side of the load under the knot on the neck. The info I gathered said the orientation of the shackle doesn’t change the actual strength of the shackle, but is better for the way it’s pulled on.

The knot was wrong but thought this pulled differently than it did today.

TIG. Still practicing, although I did weld some bungs in an aluminum coolant tank for my supercharger and it turned out decent.

Nice. Splicing can be fun. Single barid rope is way easier than double braid. That was a PITA.
Perchance is that fancy looking red knife ceramic?

I ended up making a short and long extension out of my old winch cable after my faux pas with tying it into a knot.

It’s actually not. Part of a colorful knife set from the kitchen. Videos on splicing I’ve seen mention ceramic knives do hold up the best..

kinda not funny. I did some mods to my tow rig during the last storm we had. ‘73-‘79 ford trucks are often referred to as “dent sides” because of the concave body line down the side of the truck. Mine is now a dent Roof/ dent dash / dent hood/ dent seat:pout:

Should be good as new as soon as I find time to work on it. The only thing I have more of than Tacoma parts is ‘70s ford parts

Stealing kitchen knives for garage projects can be no bueno for marital harmony.
That winch line is some tough shit to cut. I have some super sharp heavy duty shop scissors that worked well.

    Hahah

Agreed. I found the best method for me was a sharp knife used like a sawing motion on a wood block.
