    Bring a spare battery or jump box. The wiring isn't too confusing and the winch can be tested easily without full installation. If you're wanting to just test the motor and winch in/out function, bypassing the solenoid box, the easiest way is to attach a ground wire to the winch motor, and then apply power to either of the other 2 terminals. One should make the winch turn in, the other terminal should make it turn out. Aside from basic motor in/out function, the solenoid box is a bit different to test alone without a multimeter. The solenoids do go out and can be a easy/cheap fix vs replacing the winch motor. I just replaced the winch motor($150) on my xd9000 about a year ago. It got smoked during a hard pull after a year or more of sitting unused. Now I have solenoid on the line out circuit that is bad. It powers in, but not out. Even after spending $150 on a warn winch motor it was worth it since these things are $700+ new.
