2nd Gen Gas Can

Does anyone have an (affordable) alternative to this for mounting a gas can in the bed? It's too tall on end and I have to lay it on its back.

 

I was literally researching options yesterday on this. We are getting a bit more remote with our adventures and being stuck to 91 octane
(supercharged/boltons) makes carrying extra a real need. Many of the mounts are stupid expensive, like $150 + for a single mount. My original plan was to mount one of the 4 gallon long ones flat to the bottom of my bedrack or upright aginst the front og the truck bed.

Not sure about your height requirements, but with OEM roof rack you can fit 2 rows of 4 5gal cans on top...

 

If your just worried about height, and laying on its side, a 5gal tank used for an outboard engine on a boat may work for you, they can be carried up right, but made to lay flat, if you have anchor spots in the bed you can strap it down. Just an idea...

 

I have mine inside a Cantico box, about 3 ft wide. Think I paid $40 at home depot. Keeps tank dry, clean and out of sight.

 

You can't really say that if mounts are too expensive you could go to rotopax... Rotopax is so expensive it's kinda ridiculous.

 

This is the reason I don't have either lol. Just throwing out common options. I've already got a pair of jerrys just no way to mount them yet. My long term solution is to add mounts when I finally order my hc rear bumper.

 

I wouldnt trust a Walmart anything for the longevity of my truck. The reviews on that are spot on for Walmart quality.

https://www.amazon.com/Smittybilt-2...1-spell&keywords=smitty+bilt+jerry+can+holder. I cut some pieces of steel, drilled holes and then used bolts and washers to attach to the bed rail.

Only comments would be that after a few years they start to get scratched (painted metal on painted metal contact) So I used gorilla duct tape to "protect" from that. I also hit them with some clear coat every now and again. Sun in Houston is pretty harsh. If you got black you could do it easier. They also lock if you have locks.

Oh they also collect leaves and pine needles and stuff. So get used to taking them out and cleaning that area or not caring. Of course you can also take them out when not needed I suppose.

 

That's cool. I wanted to mount mine to the bed rail on the truck bed. How do you attach to the rail?

 

Description of process is per one can/cage. I got two 48” long pieces of flat iron about 2in wide, 1/8th of an inch thick and cut to about 18in or 17.5 (can’t remember) Basically to top of bed rail from bottom of bed. Drilled three holes in each. One at top for bolt to go into bed rail, and then two at bottom to connect flat iron to can holder. Then I doubled them up. So two slats on each side for a total of 4 slats. Painted black and used washers to connect to rail. Here’s a quick sketch. I think it was like $30 total in materials. Been rock solid with empty and full tanks.

Hope that kinda helps. Forgot to take it last night and just got all cleaned up for work. I’ll probably empty the gas into the truck since I’m close to empty so I can take another later. One thing I don’t like, since I live where there are a lot of pine trees, I get leaves and pine needles and stuff back behind the cans. When I wash the truck I have to go in the bed and empty it.

Well, i dunno about 1 can, but of you run 7 you can sit them across the back of the bed against the tailgate, and then cut a 2x4 for 57" and lay it in the recesses for the 2x6 that you use to lay drywall above the wheelwells, and you're golden. very little side to side sway, no forward/back movement. And cheap.
