Broke 1,000 miles and now the Pre Collision System is giving me a shit show. The truck drives fine though...for now. Anyone experiencing this as well?

Make sure to clean the glass on the windshield in front of the TSS cameras/sensor and clean the emblem. I had these issues in winter before my defroster could clean the windshield.

No more malfunctions. Dealer checked out the truck and found fuses have popped out. Reinserted them and all is good. I was informed that the Tacoma’s transport to the dealer, along with me off-roading it must’ve dislodged the fuses. I’ve driven it 50 miles since and no alerts. Hope this it.

Malfunction warnings popped up again. Took the truck back for another checkup this morning. After a more lengthy inspection, it was found that the right front speed sensor was covered with dirt and debris, thus affecting the PCS. SA said that it's odd that something would get in inside. Sensor was cleaned and things are back to normal.

Speaking of pre-collision, I felt mine could've started a collision. While in cruise, in the left lane passing a double tanker truck that was in the right lane. The freeway has a slight left bent, so the front of the tanker passed through my radar field making my Tacoma think I was too close to someone even though we were in different lanes. My truck hit the brakes all by itself, brake checking the people behind me.
I feel this "safety feature" can create an issue. I know we can turn it off, but if we do and get in a collision will the insurance company say we were negligent by deactivating the "safety feature"?

Man, don’t know about that one. I’m sure they’ll go with whatever benefits themselves.

Now this is uncool. This technology seems unpredictable.

I don't have an 18, but my understandng is that you can turn it off in settings, but you have to do it every time you start the truck.

Pretty sure it must be in the manual.

It's not unpredictable, it just doesn't behave the way you would expect a person to because the truck isn't capable of reading the context of a situation. It reads a few sensors and applies a few rules, and acts accordingly. If you learn how to read the situation and understand the rules that the truck follows, it is very predictable. The typical "automatic brake check" situation was described earlier - the road is turning up ahead but you're not turning yet, and the car in the next lane crosses your current path. The truck reads the steering angle and radar and decides whether your current track would drive into the other car. It does not know that the lane is turning up ahead. After a few times you do start to predict it and can correct it by having your foot on the gas. Your foot on the gas overrides the truck's automatic braking. You can try this out - when the truck starts automatic braking, touch the gas and the truck stops braking immediately, then starts braking again if you let off the gas. When you get really close to someone on the highway, the throttle basically controls how close you can get. Floor it, and the truck will get REAL close but won't drive into the car. Back off the throttle and the truck will back off the car, but still keep up with them.

Changing lanes also messes it up sometimes. If a car merges into your lane, the truck won't pick it up until the car is fully in your lane. Conversely, the truck will maintain distance behind a car merging out of your lane until the car is completely in the next lane. A human driver would typically start accelerating once the car ahead is 1/2 into the next lane.

This technology certainly is different and requires the driver to learn its quirks but once you do, it's very predictable. This is of course assuming all sensors are working as intended. Mine hasn't had any glitches to date, but it took a while for me to learn the situations that cause the truck to brake.

I really dislike it. It brakes often when people in front of me change in to a turn lane and slows down in the lanes next to me. Im planning to have the local dealership calibrate it or take a look at it soon. Its great when it works but it can be tempermental

Mine does that too. I don't think it's a calibration issue. The truck is just not smart enough to know that the car in front is going into the turn lane. It sees a car that is still partially in your lane and is slowing down, so it brakes. In around-town traffic, there are just so many traffic patterns and odd situations that occur, the truck could never get it right all the time. Nothing the dealer can do will teach the truck to interpret complex situations better than it currently does. It will take decades before this technology is really ready to drive like a human. My recommendation is to only use radar on the freeway as there are only a few situations that ever happen. Someone changes lanes, someone slows down, someone cuts you off. The rules are simple and it's easier to predict what the truck will do.

You can still use regular cruise control if you want, you have to hold the CC button down for a couple of seconds to get to regular cruise control. This mode turns off radar and (I believe) automatic braking.

I was not aware you could change that easily- i thought you had to set it up every time from a stop, am I incorrect?
