I hit the area right behind the door handle with the sharp edge of a square bbq grill grate I’d just bought. Looks like it went through clearcoat and paint all the way down to primer but I don’t know. 70ADC0D8-F036-4E67-9BAF-8A7773216869.jpg How best to fix?

That's definitely through the clear coat lol. Just use some touch up paint. Find your paint code and can order it online. I used to be very anal about my paint on my 2016, but have been hit (dented) twice and have numerous scratches. Comes with ownership.

    yep..
I've been using scratch x with a Dremel and buffing wheel attachment to remove them. Works really well.

I also use it on my headlights.

How long do I have to do it? I’d imagine time and weather might make applying the pens less effective at some point.

OP- if that were mine, I'd hit it with some ScratchX on a foam pad to round the edges and make it less noticeable. Rule of thumb- if you can catch on it with a fingernail, it's too deep to get rid of. Only aim for improvement. Otherwise you risk obliterating the clear coat. If it's down to the primer, hit it with a paint pen after the ScratchX.

Not sure. I got the scratch and ordered the pens right away. Applied within a week or so.

After the paint pen dries (give it a week or two to harden), you can smooth it with ScratchX.

You don't need to paint it immediately. When you do paint it, clean it with isopropyl alcohol and then immediately wipe off the alcohol with a damp towel. Let it dry, then paint.

You can definitely catch it with fingernail. Doesn’t the scratchx wear off? If so I’m not seeing how I could apply the pen on top of scratchx if the bottom layer wants to wear off.

Honestly, I'd give it a month to fully cure before messing with it. No harm at all in waiting.

Ah, so paint pen and clearcoat pen first, let cure, and then scratchx?

^^^ Good advice in this thread ^^^ ....

You can also give $100.00 to a PDR guy and have it done .... best place to find a good PDR guy is cruise the good dealers and find one working in the back lot and look at his work.

No ScratchX doesn't wear off. It's an abrasive. It will round the edges of the scratch (at the near microscopic level). And make it so it doesn't catch the light and reflect. That lessens the appearance of the scratch. You might even decide you don't want to paint it.
