The Grand National was a Buick regal originally produced in 82 with some 3rd party add-ons. It was limited to 82. 83 was a bye year, 84 is when they started with the jet black and the 3.8l......the car was only 5 hp down on power from the corvette and way more affordable.
It was a car for the masses that brought back the muscle car feel of the 60's and early 70's, and allowed the guys who were not yet able to drive the Chevells and mustangs in the 60's and 70's to experience the whole muscle car experience. For many of us it is what got us hooked on cars, after that first ride........

Good clean ones are hard to find. it is what the car does is why everyone freaks on them..
In 86 the car beat the Corvette,Mustang,Firebird, and Camaro. The one in the picture,if all original is the last of the Grand National cars which would make it the highly desired 87 which produced 276hp with 355lbs feet of torque, unless it is a GNX which was underrated at 276 hp with 366lbs feet of torque.

    Performance Specs
    • Engine. 0 to 60 MPH. Quarter Mile. Source.
    • 3.8L Turbocharged GNX. 4.7 sec. 13.5 sec @ 102 mph. Car & Driver.
    • 3.8L Turbocharged GNX. 5.5 sec. 13.4 sec @ 103 mph. Buick.
    • 3.8L Turbocharged Base. 6.1 sec. 13.9 sec @ 100 mph. Motor Trend 1987.
    • GNX production numbers 547 cars

An fellow Oil Patch guy had one. Took me for a spin & I was impressed. Then the car disappeared for about half a year while Banks engineering really stepped on it. Took me for a spin when he got it back. I was terrified

the stock form was enough, with the tyre tech in the 80's the turbo v-6 would roast the tyres going in and coming out of a corner....IF you could get it to hook up so it would go around a corner in the first place. The other one was the Monte ss 454.....Grand National was still faster.

I also saw walking the dog in my neighborhood an '80's Firebird with that same 3.8 Buick engine in it. It was backed into the garage with a ton of stuff piled all around it. Needless to say, I walk by often in hope I catch the guy in an off moment & he chooses to sell it.

only if it is the turbo version, and even then you will need to lighten the firepig to get it comparable to the performance of the Grand National.
    I had and 80 TA with a 301 in it......what a pile of shit....heavy, slow.....had a shaker and fender grates though..........should've grown a mullet........
