Haha I have the 4 banger and it did the same thing on the way up to overland and I wasn't towing anything.

Kinda confirms my opinion that it's the gearing that sucks ass- a 161 HP 4-banger has the same exact troubles as a V6- scream into 3rd, shift to 4th and lose speed, scream into 3rd, repeat until the hill levels out.

Though the 2TR-FE does have forged internals (except for pistons), and a cast iron block, and oil squirters already...

What puzzles me are these scores from space camp. Apparently 87% of us failed in the first two days because we couldn’t stop fucking with the space shuttle.

Yea but toyota won’t download a new tune then advertise the 2019 as 311 hp.

I’m thinking toyota doesn’t give a shit about hp. It’s the best selling ruck of its class.

Toyota made its name on reliability. I hope they continue to follow that philosophy. I dont want to drive a truck the way I might drive a car. Besides, all of those trucks are fucking ugly.

    Agreed.
HP bragging rights were NEVER a thing with Toyota pickups. And they have always been awesome AF for what they are, little off road jackrabbits

True, but more and more consumers are giving a shit. The point of my statement earlier wasn't to create a debate with you about what toyota gives a shit about. It was just wierd to see that the LS 350 china variant has 318 hp which is more than 14% of a difference in performance than the tacoma.....

Oh I agree. It’s crazy. That engine should be the same for each application.

I think matt got a hold of the camry ECU and found out the tables are very similar and basically found out the 302 HP or whatever the Camry says it has is overestimated (comparing it to Tacoma)

Yeah I remember that post from ovtune a while back. That's when I was like WTF the Camry is a better performing car than my taco?... I can see some loss in the drivetrain of our trucks, but not that much.

It's makes that HP at 600 more Rpm than the Tacoma does though. I dunno at any rate it means to me that Toyota is holding back with the Tacoma. I wouldn't be surprised if they just incrementally "improve" the horsepower on newer trucks in the upcoming years without changing the internals.

I drive the I4 M5 and it's fine for me. Once you start wishing for more power anything you get is still not enough(a very old story line) unless you're willing to sell out like Dodge did with the 5.7l Dakota and I'll bet even then some found it dissappointing. Backing off and enjoying what you have wouldnt hurt either.

I think what bothers me is I traded in my lifted 06 tacoma out of excitement of the new styling and tech, but once I lifted my 16 it felt so gutless, unlike my 06.... It was then when I felt that I had made a mistake, because I enjoyed my 06 powertrain which by the way had the same MPG as my 16..... Now I'm just waiting on magnuson to help me rectify my mistake.

There are things you can do to improve the situation but on any given drive you're stuck with what you have so make the best of it. Overevving the motor or overheating the tranny trying to do more than the vehicle is capable of doesn't sound like any kind of enjoyable drive I'd want to make. At some point you have to realize that and back off. Smaller tires or a regear are way cheaper than a new drivetrain. Worst case, buy yourself a more powerful fugly truck.

I’m in the same boat. Got rid of my lifted 2006 for a 17.

Thankfully the fiancée drives a 17 4runner with the trusty 1GR-FE

Regeared to 4.88, not worried about tranny... Its MT, more worried for clutch after supercharger.

This engine is so damn flexible with its valve timing and controlling its dynamic compression ratio that it's really a matter of using a different engine map and a higher grade fuel. Obviously throwing premium in doesn't do any good because the mapping in the tacoma doesn't care about it. I suspect they did that in order to keep torque lower and requiring a lesser grade of fuel. It also gives them the ability to do a mid model power bump without any R&D dollars.

Not really... a bad start or some tire spin or a bad/slow shift would easily mask the miniscule 0-60 gains you might get from a 10% increase in HP. Conversely, swapping out the transmission on one of these trucks with something that could shift faster would probably net a much bigger increase in 0-60 times than 10% more hp without adding any. The biggest issue is that a shift that should take .25-.5 seconds actually takes at least 1 second, sometimes 1.5 and there are at least two shifts to get to 60 if you let it wind up in second. Thats 2-3 seconds where you are losing speed during a full speed acceleration run
