Water in cab

I am going to be taking my truck to the dealership today. I got in my truck Saturday, and in my passenger floor there is a huge puddle. I wouldn't have noticed this before but since I got my weather techs is staid standing. Now I have had water in my radio screen before, but by the time I got to the dealership that time it dried up with the Texas heat. So two times now this has happened. It may have happen before, but never notice because of carpet mats. Any insights on the matter?

 

If no water coming in through the cabin air intake (or no water in your fan unit), then you have two possibilities:
1. The drain line for your heater/ac core could be plugged.
2. You could have a leaking windshield seal.

If you have water in the air intake (or in the fan unit), then two more possibilities:
3. The drains in the cowl could be plugged.

I'll tell them to check that. Would the cabin filter or ac plugged be related to the water in the radio though?

 

There's only three ways you're going to get water in the radio.

First is a leaking windshield. However, even that seems remote. It would have to drip down onto the dash and run in via the faceplate. In which case, you'd likely see evidence of that.

The second possibility is a leak in the heater core which would have to spray coolant everywhere. Not likely at all.

The most likely reason why you'd have water in the radio is due to condensation. And this could be directly related to a plugged drain in the cab. If you live in a humid area, and the condensation buildup can't drain out, then you're really increasing the humidity inside the cab (look at people with windows fogging up all the time). Shoot, if I bring my cold tools from the garage into my house in the wintertime where it's warmer, they instantly get wet with condensation on them.

 

I recall another post a few weeks ago about someone having a leak coming from the overhead console/map light thing...
but i don't think that is far enough forward to leak onto/into the sound system...more likely
the windshield molding as stated.

I think it was a roof rack thread?..because it had content about
those 2 rubber molding strips on the roof.

Mine was leaking there. I haven't had a hard rain since to get pictures to push on Toyota to fix. The water that dripped did so right at the cup holder.

 

Another spot to look at are the body seams below the rear window. In my 08 I would find the drivers side floor mat wet after a heavy rain. The drivers side seam was leaking just under the rear window and the water was flowing under the rear seats, floormats and into the driverside pan. Everything was dry on the rear floor. Have the dealer check that seam if they cannot locate any other leak.

 

Well they said they ran an extensive water test...... and found nothing. I was upset and asked if he told them some possibilities (from TW peeps responses) and he said yes. I then said explain why I had an inch of standing water on my floor mat and the last time a puddle in my radio screen, and he could not answer just told me to bring it up here right away. I told him I would have but it was the weekend. He said they are open Saturday mornings, but that wouldn't be a good time because they only have a 1/3 of their workforce..... Pissed/Confused. Done with my rant.

 

You then have two choices (since they didn't ever find mine either through that "extensive" water test). You can test some things out yourself to try and find it, or you can wait until it happens again (which could be years) and then look for it at that time. If you choose to wait and you find a puddle on the floor again, lean up under the passenger dash and look/feel around for the water. If it's coming in through the cabin air intake, you'll find water dripping behind the fan unit. There's an area up in there where it'll come through.

If you want to test out the cabin air intake for leakage, do the following:
1. Park somewhere near a hose where your truck is at the same incline/angle as where you were when it leaked.
2. Remove the glove box door completely (remove the damper, lower it all the way and then lift up at the hinges to pop it off completely).
3. Open the cabin air filter door and remove any filters.
4. Insert a paper towel into the air filter slot to catch any water drips (as evidence that it occurred).
5. Grab a hose and run it on the windshield between the center and passenger side for a while checking the paper towel periodically for leaks. If the paper towel gets wet, then it's the channel in the cowl not working well enough and you'll need to put a cover over the air intake under the cowl cover.
6. If no leaks, remove the cowl cover and run water into the cowl area (not into the cabin air intake obviously) and see if it's draining properly.

Beyond those steps, I'm at a loss.

 

I will try to test that tonight.
