From my experience with the Corvettes, you feel it long before you hear it. I'm not sure if the Tacomas are the same, but changing the fluid to Dexron LS (regular gear oil with additive) completely cures the problem. The new Camaro rear end, which is Australian (Holden), can use synthetic gear oil with limited slip. So, some of the synthetics on the market will probably work fine in the Tacoma, but if my diff was LSD, I would stick with what Toyota puts in it. I don't know what the long term effects of running synthetic gear oil in the LSD Tacomas are, so, why take a chance? Maybe another member on the forum that has been using synthetic in their LSD for a long time can chime in and change my opinion.

Does 3 months count as long term :D.
Reading all the posts is confusing as it seems that for some synthetic works for other does not, despite the fact we are trying the same oil, and the same additives. Some of the synthethics I tried went almost 3 months before making such a grinding noise that it was time to change fluid again. I also know that my LSD still worked before I had put regular oil in it and it worked in Winter fine so whatever that grinding was it had no ill effect on Diff at least not that I can see one.

Great information gang and I'm on the hunt myself for some fluids.

I wanted to run with Amsoil Severe Gear since it worked great in our corvette LSD. Well - from what I'm reading, people need to add more friction modifier. What's the point? Besides that, I have to pay $20 (1 year) to renew my 'preferred customer' account PLUS the cost of the oil. For something I've gonna need once every 3-4 years.....

I called two different toyota dealerships to get a quote on having the rear diff fluid changed - and one dealership quoted me $40 (and I honestly think he's full of shit) and the other one quoted me $60.

I might just call a dealership and get a quote on the cost of the oils/additives and do this myself. Depending cost. If that $40 quote was right...hell, I'll let them do it!

These Toyota LSD's are awefully picky on what they prefer.....never thought changing the rear diff was gonna be this difficult. :p

    Thanks for the input gang!!

The Corvette diff fluid Dexron LS (part number 88862624) retails for about $22.00 per quart. Most Vettes take about 2 quarts. Diff services are about 1 - 1.5 hours labor, so those dealers must have forgotten to quote you the labor charge. Either that or they are running one hell of a special!:D

for me, it was only when I first pull out or move the truck. Didnt feel it while driving on the road.

I'll back up out of my spot and pull forward. Sometimes I'll feel it when i was backing up. Sometimes, when I start pulling forward.

It's a slight vibration in the rear. Not enough to make you think something is broken. But enough to go HMMMMmmm.

I have an 05' 4x4 with 30,000 miles on it and my rear diff just started to shudder when I make right turns, with the factory oil in it. Is there something being damaged in the diff. I am going to change the rear diff only, should I go ahead and change the transfer case and the front while I am at it? Can anyone give me any suggestions?

I was told to go ahead and change the front diff and transfer case while I was at it.;) Makes sense, might as well do it all at once.

    Who you asking Stan?

Those quotes were for the tacoma diff service. Sorry, I should've stated Toyota in there (I added it).

We performed the diff service on the vette with the Amsoil Sever gear and it's been flawless for 2 years. No additional additives at all.

Gonna call the Toyota dealer and get pricing on the toy oil/additives. Compare to online pricing and go from there. I really wanted to use synthetics, but I don't want any headaches after the fact as most folks are having.

I noticed your Corvette is a C5. The chatter problem didn't start until the C6 came out. I don't know what the difference is, because the rear diffs are very similar in design. At our shop we put the Dexron LS in every limited slip differential now, because the results have been very good. BTW, I looked at the pics of your Vette on your home page. Very nice car. Nice Tacoma too!:)

Not yet. My diff is open, but there is a guy that works here with a Tacoma Sport, however, he hasn't serviced his diff yet. I'll see if he wants to try it, but it's actually cheaper to get 80w90 and some additive. That's basically what Dexron LS is. The additive is just premixed in with gear oil.

Well if I have some time after my shift tonight, I am going to swap out my at least my rear diff oil with the Valvoline 80W-90 with a 4oz. bottle of Redline friction modifier. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. Ohhh....so whats the break-in process after I swap it out? Just go for a drive around town? I heard figure 8's in a parking lot? Also, I think I read somewhere that after you take it for a drive, when you get back, that you should take off the fill-cap and top it off, is that right?

Yeah, I figured it would be cheaper to use off the shelf conventional. Dexron is only available from the GM dealer, right? I thought the Dexron LS was synthetic, but I haven't looked for it either.

According to the back of the bottle, it just contains petroleum gear oil and lsd additive. It is a 75w90 weight, so it may have some synthetic in it. I'm not 100% sure.

Here's a thread about it from a Corvette forum.

Just had the rear LSD serviced on my 08 Sport at the Toyota dealer today and it was $42!!!! That included labor, fluid, additive, and misc. shop parts. I figured for $42 they can do it and save myself the hassle.

That's an awesome price. My Chevy dealer charges a minimum of $75.00 labor for a diff service. That's before the cost of oil.
