my truck has the clacking slap and its getting louder, I used a second set of anti rattle springs on the top caliper pin,new caliper pins, oem pads and its still there, I can live with it cause I like the truck but I don't think there is a way to get rid of it other than prematurely replacing the front pads before they are thoroughly wornout.

When I had this problem on my 2008, I used oem pads and lubricated the pins with brake grease. The pad slap did not come back. The 2014 that I have now is making noise, but I haven't got around to fixing it. I have plenty of pad left, so I might just clean everything up and lube it.

I just rebuilt my front brakes. The slap was noticeable. The old pads had become hard or "crystalline" as another member noted about his; and were worn down, remaining thickness was about the same as the backing plate on it. Both calipers also had stuck pistons. The braking system was rusted and full of dry mud, as spirited off roading/mudding brought them to their final end. The new setup hasn't been tested yet as I'm waiting on brake lines from Toyota.

Here is what it looks like.

The only thing that holds the rotors in place is properly torqued lug nuts from what I can see. I would suggest anybody redoing their brakes to make sure lug nuts are torqued and that they pump the brakes to get thing's into the best placement prior to putting wheels back on.

    *Update
I had previously replaced pads, rotors, hardware and even calipers. I found the TSB about the brake lube offered by toyota to stop the noise. Went ahead and ordered. applied said lube and after a day or two the slap stopped. Stuff was close to $35 shipped for this tiny tube but whatever is in it worked and got rid of that annoying sound!

Hey guys. Got a question. I sometimes get a click/pop sound when I go over bumps and dips. It's coming from the front left. Dealer told me it's brake slap. Does that sound right?

I don't get the sound when stopping it starting...

    Bumps/dips is not brake slap.

Hitting your brakes while transitioning between forward and reverse (like in a parking lot) is when you'll hear brake slap.

I still don't understand why this isn't addresses better. My dealer will do zero for it. Won't even work the TSB that exist cuz they say it's only a TSB for 1st Gen.

During cold temps (30F and below) my pad slap goes away. So essentially 3 months a year it doesn't sound like I'm driving a pile of garbage.

Bought my 15 new for $32K. No vehicle I ever owned has this yet I get a Tacoma and everyone acts like I have been walking on water my whole to never know of this "acceptable" and "normal" noise. Such a joke.

Lots of dollars and no sense...

This is the answer I was looking for! Nice write up and picture and part #. Because if you think about it, the pins can and will wear down. I used my old pins when I did the pad and rotor job. I spent a couple cigarettes worth of time sanding down the corrosion on the old pins. No wonder the pads shift. Will be getting new pins, do a little 'in-out' job, short and painless, and report back.

Thanks for saving me a service bill for them to look confused, hand me 4 pieces of paper and a triple digit bill.

    Cheers!

Please do report back afterwards! I am a mechanical noob. Have done oil change and retrofit headlight install....thats the extent of my "skill" level.

I may try this but if you do this, a few more pics would help me out so I dont screw up.

    Thanks,
    Arto

This weekend I installed new pads and used caliper grease on all of the pins and contact points including the back of the pads where the pistons contact them. Pad slap gone!

    Thats great news!

But isnt pad slap only an issue when pad are a bit worn down and a gap is created?

If you are talking about "slap" when changing direction then yes then truck was new and after I changed out worn pads. I'll get it when backing out of the garage then going forward. Since I know what it's doing and that it's normal it doesn't bother me.

only way to get rid of it is to replace the pads where the gap is non existent, i did new pins, grease, upper retaining clip, oem pads. and it keepscoming back clack clack clack I can hear it in my sleep
