Smitty tent and the annex is 1158 shipped via Amazon.

Kukenam Sky from REI 1425 - 285 (20%) = 1140 picked up from an REI store.

Basically the same price but you get the annex option with the Smitty. Without ever seeing an RTT in person but reading plenty of reviews, I think there may be a few things the Tepui does better: zipper storage cover vs Velcro on the Smitty, the mattress pad has better reviews, and then customer service and availability of spare parts.

I'm still deciding but will probably go Tepui with the sale just because of the name. I'll decide later if I wanna spend 370 on the matching annex for it.

That's for the smaller Smitty I'm guessing. There are sales for the Smitty too at times, mostly in the fall (black Friday). Did you look into 4 wheels parts too? Can you get any color from REI? When is the 20% good?

I may end up going that route too if I pull the trigger soon.

    For sure go Tepui IMO

Also, FWIW I've only used my annex once and it was for the woman at the time. Since then, I'm cool changing either outside in nature or in the tent lol

Not sure if anyone has seen these, but here are some new style of RTT security clamps to mount to tubing that are being made in SoCal, been following this guy on Insta for a while and really like what he is doing and what he can fab up. So thought I would pass it along. I am in no way affiliated with him or anything, I just like what he is doing and these are some pretty nicely designed RTT mounts.

IMO: Hands down, the Tepui RTT is a much better tent than a whole lot of other brands. Tepui and a couple other manufactures are top notch tents. If you only camp once in a blue moon then the lower quality RTT is for you. If you camp quite frequently and set up and pack up consistently while off roading then the much more durable, reliable RTT is the Tepui. With the price difference of Tepui and Smittybilt being almost the same, I would put my money on Tepui. Better quality, better customer service and all the parts are available if needed. I own the Tepui Ruggedized XL for three years and have not had any issues with the Tent. I've had my all weather cover replaced by Tepui under warranty and received my replacement within 5 business days from notifying them. Outstanding service. If you decide to go Tepui, give them a call and ask questions about the model you plan to buy from REI....Do research and find out what requirements and needs you require. RTT's serve all different purposes and camping lifestyles. Good luck with your purchase and have fun with your new RTT addition.

Yea, that's for the small Smitty. 4wp is the same price as Amazon at the moment. REI only has either green or grey for the Kukeman Sky 3, it's lacking the camo patterns.

Thank you both for the recommendation. My only area of concern is that the tent will probably see more beach camping than trail and the salt and sand can do nasty things over time. I don't see me using it but for a few trips a year, but I will be doing some sort of expedition in the coming months/years as time/money/work allow.

Have you seen their new 2" strap with an anodized aluminum buckle? Will be available as standard equipment on their RTT which is still in development, and also as an accessory upgrade for everyone else's tent. They have some other cool upgrades in the works to.

That is def a nice looking buckle and a nice big strap... I have never really understood why everyone uses plastic buckles with such a small strap with the RTT...

For those located in the SLC area as well, BackCountry.com looks to be having another 20% off one item. I used this a couple months back to purchase my Kukeman Sky 3 and saved on shipping by picking it up at the warehouse in West Valley.

There appears to be a disclaimer on "Brand" exclusion, that may or may not affect Tepui. When they last did this 20% off I had to call them up and ask, they initially said no, but I had a buddy at work that was successful and upon telling them that they put me on hold to talk to a supervisor (literally less than 15 seconds) to come back and tell me that I could use the coupon on Tepui. I honestly don't think there was an issue, they just try not to apply it to big ticket items like RTTs.

I have put a RTT on an OME rack and I strongly discourage it
I drove it to work and back 15 miles each way, on pretty smooth roads and it started denting the crossbars

    Just my $.02 tho

Good to know, I was hoping to do that just go get it home 6hrs from REI. Then I need to wait for my rack to be built so I can actually use it.

I guess I need to look into the box dimensions from REI and if it will fit in a short bed.

    Edit

Box dimensions for the Sky 3 are 59 x 48 x 11.5. that should barely squeeze into a short bed, and I think will clear the ST rails.

Buy two 2x4's and cut them to just over the width of the bed to form cross braces. From the scrap, cut 4 blocks and screw them into the wood just to the inside edge of the lip of the bed. That will keep them from shifting. Put tent on top then ratchet strap it down to the tie down points in the bed.

    easy peasy.

I think it will fit in the bed and I would be able to cover it with the ST. I may use the 2x4 idea to keep the rear of box the same height at the wheel wells the front would be resting on.

Mounted the tent a few weeks ago. Sedona, AZ trip over the weekend. Tepui Ayer 2, so far I'm digging it. Far more comfortable than sleeping in my Marmot backpacking tent. Easy to pack up before I head out every morning.
