Mexican President calls for curb of Second Amendment rights

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Mexican President Felipe Calderon feigns support for the Second Amendment then proceeds to call for banning popular semi-autos.

I read the article, where did he call for banning semi-autos? He was pointing out the correlation between the end of the ban on those weapons and the rise in gun-related violence in Mexico.

i call for curbing the influx of uneducated, working under the table, no tax paying, (invaders) "immigrants".

*note* I have no problem whatsoever with foreign persons who have attained legally-gained citizenship.

the cartels will just get weapons from somewhere else, if it's not from here...might as well move some American manufactured goods as far as i'm concerned.

We need to ban grenades too, that way they couldn't get them down there......

And I'd have to debate those number, 7,000 stores along the Mexican border and 5,000 gun shows???? I know of like 1 gun shows here in San Diego, Crossroads of the West. There are maybe a dozen gun shops in this city, none of which sell "assault" weapons. And last I checked M16's weren't for sale now, or ever to civilians here in the states, yet they end up in the hands of the Mexican drug cartels.....

The US-Mexican border is a lot larger than the city limits of San Diego, and M-16 type weapons are easily available in other border states.

    Really?

I was referring to the county of San Diego, not the city. And the gun shows are far and few between out here.

So there's an additional 4,999 gun shows in the other three states that border Mexico? Seeing how there U.S./Mexico border is roughly 2,000 miles, that's 2.5 shows per mile, this included the more than 1,000 miles of open desert to. San Diego is one of the major cities and home to the worlds busiest border crossing and there's one gun show here.

And show me where a civilian can buy an M16 in the United States

If you want to see examples of civilians owning M-16 type assault weapons, just look at the show off your guns thread in this forum. According to the ATF there are an estimated 5,000 gun shows in the US per year. Guns make it into mexico from as far away as gun shows in Eastern Washington. http://www.yakima-herald.com/storie...oophole-has-some-weapons-smuggled-into-mexico.

Maybe that's what he was talking about, I have no idea. Look, I'm a gun-owner. I go to gun shows. My whole point was that this thread mischaracterizes the interview by saying that he wanted to curb our constitutional rights, which he does not say.

I want to see examples of civilians owning/buying M16's, not "M16-type" weapons.

And my whole point to bringing up the M16 argument is maybe the weapons aren't even coming from the gun shows and shops, since they are a military only weapon. Perhaps someone in the U.S. government/military is supplying the weapons?

Then first you'll have to show me where someone ever claimed you could buy a full M-16 weapon as a civilian.

Since they are finding M16's (not M16-type) in the hands of the drug cartels, they are getting them from somewhere.

Violent street gangs here in the US have members in the US military... thats where they are getting them.

Street gangs in American cities get weapons from their members in the US military (especially the Army), who then trade them to Mexican Cartels for drugs that they end up selling on the street for cash.

Maybe not all the guns are obtained this way but some are for sure.

I read the article too. Packerfan got it wrong. Mr. Calderón never said anything about banning popular semi-autos.

    Here is a quote:
What Calderon said was controversial, but don't stretch what he said.

Packer, do you even read the article before you posted?

As far as drug cartels getting M16s; They get them from the Mexican Federal police and they got them from The U.S. gov't.
