Hey, i have a few chips in the hood that started getting some rust.. these chips are still small, the largest is less than half the size of the end of a no. 2 pencil eraser. Whats the right way to repair these besides a paint shop?

Buy some factory touch up paint. Carefully sand off the rust and apply some touch up paint to cover the bare metal.

It's most likely just surface rust so something like 600/800 grit could work.

If they are real small 600 or 800 works nice and don't use the brush if ya don't have to. Use a paper clip or similar to fill then give it a few days and use lacquer thinner on a rag to melt it down and smooth it .

AmmoNYC has a good video on YouTube about filling scratches. Same technique would apply mostly to rock chips too

Depends on how much the Toyota pen is. The duplicolor ones are usually under 10 bucks. Not sure about clearing it but if it's that small you'd probably barely notice once you smooth it out and buff and wax. Depends on how obsessive you are and your expectations.

    If it's a 2010 I wouldn't go too nuts. That's just me.

11 bucks ain't bad .May as well go for it and save the trip to a store. When I go I'm guaranteed to find/buy more stuff anyways.

But yeah solid plan treat the rust cover it up make it look good and enjoy.

Speaking of touch-up paint...can anybody recommend a source other than Toyota? I bought some stuff online way back and it was crap. I don't want to go cheap, but for spot fixes and scratches I'd like to avoid stealership prices.

best one i bought so far was from autozone duplicolor all in one. it has the paint which is very close to factory paint, and a clear coat as well. i touched up a few spots on my truck, came out great. its not worth going to the body shop because every year i get chips from rocks flying off the road. its good to have in the truck.

After touching up you can smooth it over with Langka.

Man I left mine in my driveway for 21 days while on vacation in Hawaii got back and the sun had baked my truck to death along with the chips going from ur size to ab the size of a base ball .. it’s mainly on the hood . Thank god for the stupid vent shade or w/e pretty much hides it all But the clear coat has went to crap in a lot of places . I’d say re paint is what I’m gonna do but I’m curious how the pen worked out for ya
