@stronghammer Loving the post about your trip. Quite the experience I'm sure. So many people truly need things.

Edit: Puts into perspective what is really important and what is not.

I've always known we have a lot, but I never truly knew how much more than other places.

Haitians use notebook paper, rocks, and corncobs to wipe there rears if they can't afford toilet paper for crying out loud...

amen to that. I know going there has given me a very different perspective. I would love if all Americans were given an opportunity to go to a country like that just to see how good we have it.

So after being gone for almost 4 months doing army things, I'm back. Any wheeling trips coming up? I'm starting to really put some money in the truck as far as mods go and need to use them to justify it to the wife. Haha. Today I'm actually getting a set of ADS coilovers, probably install them later this week.

Hope all is well! Haven't had a chance to read all one thousand pages that I missed.

Hopefully I can actually make an appearance in real life so I'm not just a random internet man with a keyboard. Luckily I don't have any huge commitments coming up in the known future so hopefully I can make it to a mod day or something.

That one in particular who was complaining that her $5000 allowance got bumped down to $1000. She felt like a peasant. I'm sure she's not on Tacomaworld though. A Tacoma is not good enough for Ms. Priss to drive.

So after the Thursday clinic we got back to it on building the house Friday. Had to be done that day and we were confident we could do it. Saturday was our day to go to the Artistic Village and the Voodoo Priest's house, yep you read that right.

So back to the house, starting with the rafters and runners:

Two of our guys also took upon the task of making the windows and door, keep in mind I'm the skillsaw guy.
    20180518_125232.jpg

At most one point we had about 30 locals watching us build the house. The kids loved it. They wanted to help with everything. A few kids stuck around inside watching the window making process. You can see in these photos that one of the kids was scared of having his picture taken. The kids were the best part. They loved playing peek-a-boo in the windows with us and were just giggly and so happy. They just wanted to help, hold your hand, and feel your arm to see if you felt differently than they did.

We even added columns to the overhanging portion on the front of the house.

Our building team and the finished product! This will house a family of 5, husband/wife/3 kids. 12' x 20' home that most of us wouldn't even qualify as a shed, and they were so thankful.
    DSCN0199.jpg
    20180518_170915.jpg

We gave them a 5 gallon bucket of paint to paint it and we believe they had paint of their own so they can personalize it. All buildings around town were customized some so we felt wrong painting it ourselves. They were thankful for the paint.

Then Saturday was our day of shopping and site seeing. We first went and saw the lake which was beautiful aside from the enormous amounts of garbage.

Then we went to the Artistic Village where they hand stamp metal decor. Very cool to watch them do it and they make some incredible stuff. This is where I bought gifts for my girlfriend and family. They are all so thankful to have us come buy some of this stuff (for really really cheap in our eyes, but tons of money to them) and they kept calling us "my friend". "My friend, please come into my shop I give you best price you are welcome make yourself home" is what most of the shop owners said, and they would follow you around making sure you would stop by their shop to look. Most shops had similar decor in them, so it got repetitive but they were so friendly so we walked into all of them and tried to make sure we all bought from different ones.

After that it was time to go to the Voodoo Priest's home. Apparently he doesn't do healing, he only does curses. So he actually came one day to our clinic to get a prescription haha! His house was creepy, not that I believe any of it, but I didn't touch anything so as to not offend him.

He even had Haitian visitors that day, we had no clue why but they just sat there in silence as we looked around. He was very welcoming to us.

Then we had church service on Sunday with all of the Haitians. It was amazing how well dressed they all were and how they didn't sweat a single drop even in sweaters and full suits!! I was in one of those fishing style shirts and some breathable hikers pants and I was DYING. They sang traditional songs that we actually knew, but we couldn't understand the words, we only recognized them by the tune of the song.
    https://youtu.be/Av9gAMKag04

After church we took off for the airport, boarded our plane and headed to ATL. Of course I told y'all that weather made us divert to Charleston for a couple hours and I didn't get back home in Huntsville till about 2:30am. Long day that was.

Overall FANTASTIC trip. I'm still fighting a bit of sickness, nothing major, but I would go again. I'm kinda sad I can't give blood since I've been there because I love giving blood, but these people need any help they can get so I'm glad to provide it. If I get an opportunity to go again, no doubt I will.

Thank you all for the prayers and well wishes during our travels.

Very cool but you wouldn't bet me in the House of Santeria! I didn't see them so I will ask, hurricane clips for roof/walls and how did you fasten to the concrete sub-floor? Hate to see all your effort go to waste during the upcoming storm season.

no hurricane clips for the roofs/walls. fastening to the concrete was just by using concrete nails and grommets. it's not the best construction, but it's what money could buy. it's extremely hard to get money for funding things in Haiti because most people haven't been there to understand what it's like so they don't support it. Joe told us this house in materials alone cost about $3,000. Where the materials back home would've cost less than $1,000. Everything is more expensive in Haiti.

like I said, most of us wouldn't even qualify this as a shed, and it probably won't hold up to a major storm, but the family was thrilled to have somewhere to lay their head at night.
