due to the smell and the 'fuel pump problem', I'm guessing fuel wash.

    Easier right?

Pull one you can get to easy and see if that piston goes freely upwards.

Actually.......which side had the poor looking spark plugs?

Bolts on the crank and piston rods. Myself I would start with the piston rods that just don't look right as mentioned by others. Once you get each cap off try turning crank away from that rod.

Yep. Caps are on the bottom, connecting rod caps (2 bolts) on the bottom of the rods connecting the crank to the piston. Main caps (4 bolts and are marked with numbers), hold the crank in the block.

Leave those larger (15mm I think) 4 bolt caps alone for now. Those are the crank main caps.

Look at connecting rod cap #2. There looks to be a piece of something between the connecting rod cap and the main cap.

I think they're notched to go back one way....keep track of where.

Don't take my word though, I'd have to go to the garage and dig out a Toyota rod to be sure.

All caps should be installed back into their factory location and orientation. What I do if more than one comes off is clean the base of the cap (visible portion on the bottom when everything is bolted up) and use a paint pen to mark them starting from the front.

From the front. It is on the front side of the main cap that is marked 2. Second connecting rod from the bottom of this picture. Disregard arrows.
