It might be an image trick. It could just be the counterweight. But it looks odd on my phone.

I'm looking at it on a 22" screen. Looks like machining to me. laughs. On the downside, I still have to wear glasses to see anything on here.

Was hoping you would find this. Hydrolocked.

Yes, caps are easy to figure out which way is correct orientation, you will have to tap them with a small hammer to release the built in tension when removing.

See those scratches by the nut? That was where it hit the block. The only thing keeping it from turning over.

Yes Mark them and do one at a time. Some here may know, but if the are fracture fit then the cap will only go on one rod, one way.

They're not fractured but have machine marks different from one side to the other.

Thought fractured rods were only used on High end engines? But you never know?

If/When you pull the caps, as said before, note the order they came off and orientation. I always lay them on a clean part of the bench out of the way and don't mix them up. At this point I like to cover them with a rag so friends or the kids don't come by and pick them up to look at them. Then I put some hose over the bolts and tap them with a rubber hammer to move the pistons away from the crank. The bearing material is very soft and it is very important to make sure that they don't get marked up. They also need to be kept as clean as possible. If the bearings can come out easily, I also take them out( making sure to note the orientation and order.)

Or if you are just in rip and tear mode, go hard. Bearings, pistons, rods, wrist pins, are not all that much money, most rebuild shops would be able to get you parts very easily.

Still too early to tell. If just bent rod then can rebuild. If something tore into cylinder wall then no. Gotta start getting more apart to know.

    looks ok so far.

If turned in for a core....somebody would rebuild it.

edit: yes still a chance a bore is gouged beyond a bore change.

In my case above, I just replaced that rod and a piston and rod that shattered. Camry is still ticking along.

What if he used his phone to make a high-def well lit video of the nooks and crannies and uploaded it to youtube? That may help more than the pics?

As long as it's not something crazy, it should be rebuildable. You are the one doing all the hard work. Once you find the problem, then it will be easier to determine if it is cost effective to rebuild. Machine shop prices are relatively cheap, and most will provide some sort of warranty. Or you can do almost everything yourself. Head on down to the local store that sells cheapo tools and you can probably pick up enough stuff to do a one of engine rebuild job for a hundred bucks.
