I usually use 7ft 1 piece rods. Having them stick up while going down the road is a nono. One pebble hitting one of the rods i built would destroy it. I keep them in the cab now, from Front Passenger to back driverside. I am thinking about building a rod tube i can bolt into my bed, my kayak and tbone wouldstick out further so not worried about the extra foot or so past my tailgate.

Meh. If they can't take it riding in the back, I don't want it.

Thanks Dublr5, your idea worked perfectly and looks so clean. I had been racking my brain trying to figure out the cleanest way to install rod holders.37181FF7-4DDA-4AD9-98CA-C09C8EEFCA0A.jpg6B5FF95F-20DB-4F25-B98D-D6F7714A2071.jpg2C195879-8701-4B1E-AFBA-7ADB5369CFB3.jpg

I finally finished them up today mostly. Just have to add a small bungee system to go around the reels and hold them down in there for traveling. One t-nut and bolt holds them on. Two poles per side, leaving the middle open for kayak/stuff transportation. Not perfect but it'll do.IMG_0798.jpg

I use Yakima powderhounds on the roof and somewhat custom made a bracket for the n fab light bar in front.

How do the rods hold up when your driving 70 mph down the highway? It looks like most of these stick up above the top of the truck.

Someone mentioned above about Rod Vaults, but they are more fly rod specific (and really expensive).

If it's just driving from spot to spot, I think something like this would be pretty useful:

I have a Thule Castaway that I mount on some bed bars, although I've mounted it on a prinsu too. It is discontinued though, but I love it. It's nice because I can lock the box where the reels sit. This is mostly for driving from spot to spot, and I don't usually have them on there for long distances. No rods in it.

I've flown and driven all over the western US and BC with rods in Bazuka tubes. No complaints. I've never mounted them to the roof though.

If you are just looking to protect rods and don't have an ego dependent on style points or "grams" then PVC and ABS pipe works. You just have to massage the threaded plugs or caps so they can be removed easier. Can even put a reducer on the end to accommodate a reel.

Where do you keep the bazuka tubes if not on the roof?

In the bed of my truck. Its a truck. It carries things.

Occasionally they are even in a car, truck cab, airplane cargo hold, or hotel room.

Maybe I'm not understanding the question.

Gotcha. I was just wondering because my bed is 5 ft and most rods are 6 ft i feel like, so wasn't sure if it would fit in the bed but I guess it could diagnonally.

My problem is that I want some way to carry my 2 rods that doesn't take up bed space, can't be stolen, (needs to be permanent as I always want to have them with me) and isn't exposed to the elements. I was thinking about somehow mounting the bazuka holder under the truck next to the frame (right beside where you put running boards).
