AC Condenser

So my condenser rattled or of its brackets and snapped one of the lines that runs to it. The mechanic says I need a whole new condenser...my question is is can a condenser go bad if it doesn’t have refrigerant in it for a sustained period of time?

I believe all I need is a new line but he’s insisting I need to spend almost $1K to get it all fixed. I can charge the system myself and install the hose myself, but if I actually need the new condenser I guess I’ll have to pay it...

 

Give it a shot. What have you got to lose? You will need to do a bit more than just put in new line(s) and refill refrigerant.

I recharged the system on my car. You just have to vent at one end and fill on the other, to purge all the air out of the system. Air mixed in with refrigerant really doesn't work to cool things.

Some say this is illegal. I guess it is. But why would laws stop anyone from doing something.

 

No, just ... no. Do not do it this way.

It is:
Illegal IAW the the EPA.
Not the proper way to fill it.
Dangerous to the system.
