I suspect if they'd deemed he intended to start the fires he'd be sitting in jail for that decade (or longer).

A 15 year old won't have a lot of wages over the next ten years, realistically. Garnishment typically allows for one to still be able to eat and manage typical expenses.

It's pretty clear (IMHO) that this sentence is intended to get people's attention at how serious it is to f' with fire in the wrong places and there's no expectation to really recoup the taxpayer money spent due to this kid's idiocy.

Maybe if they allowed caning as punishment for fk'n up as a kid, many more would be deterred... :drevil:

At 15 I would expect him to know better. He took 2 fireworks lit them and threw them into a canyon knowing the area was in severe drought conditions. Punishment is extreme, but I believe that it is more to set an example.

I've known intelligent 15yo's and complete dumbasses. Hard to say with this kid.

As far as severe drought conditions, not sure where you're getting that...

I thought Oregon and California were in drought conditions when this happened

I'm not sure, since I was out there in June.

I've found 2 different results from the same source (NOAA, one severe and the other mild). I doubt the kid took that into consideration. Most likely, he wanted the explosion echo from the canyon, but even I'm speculating.

I grew up, not far from where this happened. I played with fireworks when I was his age (mostly illegal in Oregon, but not in Washington). Not a smart thing to do, but it happens a lot. :anonymous:

Drought conditions varied from year to year, based on rainfall.

Actually, he'd need $3.7 million a year to pay that off in 10 years.

He just needs to move to Seattle and get the minimum wage bumped up to around $1850.00 an hour and he'll be set!

I can buy that. We pounded the work ethic into our son and daughter at an early age and it paid off.

It will pay off. I know people with two daughters that were spoiled rotten their whole lives. Now they're 25 year old children with an entitlement mentality.

We both grew up without a lot and my wife frustrates me at times by trying to give him everything we didn’t have. I’m trying to teach him everything we didn’t know. It’s an uphill battle but he’s pretty sharp. He just progressed in scouts.

Might as well add cigarettes to the list with how many I’ve seen flicked out of windows driving down the freeway.
