My Garage Build

I figured it would be fun to make a thread here of my garage "build." The majority of the work is done, but I still have a bit to do. We got our house about a year ago, and the garage was the "dumping" ground if you will for all boxes etc. As such, my GTO barely fit inside as the only car.

I wanted my "dream" garage. Ideally I would have a 3 car, but I have to make do. This is a 2 car, it runs about 19.5 feet deep and 21.75 in width. Luckily, it's got high ceilings (about 11 feet). It was also fully finished with drywall and insulation, so that's nice.

What kicked me off was Lowe's and Amazon having 25% off Gladiator cabinets. I'd been wanting cabinets, and the sale put these in line with plain unfinished prefab options. I snagged a few and assembled them. They're actually very impressive quality.



Then I mounted them up using their track system, super easy. I set them up to be overheads above a workbench.



You can still see a big, lovely mess below them. Then I went to work on my tool box. It's a Kobalt model, has power strips and all. My buddy is a manager at a Lowe's. This was returned because the drawers don't all lock. That's a non-issue for a home garage, so he hooked me up with a crazy good deal on it.



Next up was overhead storage. I originally bought two 4x8 overhead racks. Then I discovered I had engineered joists, not ideal for hanging overhead racks from. I returned them and came up with plan B. I have a main beam if you will, across the garage. Using that, I made a basic shelf that runs the width of the garage. It nets roughly 44 sq feet of storage. Not as much as the racks, but it cost less than half as much in supplies. I ran it above the door so it's out of the way and doesn't make the area cramped. It took about 4 hours of my time, and I actually enjoyed the process. The supoorts are 1 foot on center from the wall, and 2 feet on center from there. I left a couple larger gaps though for larger items. Ignore the ceiling hole, it was exploratory to see what kind of joists I had lol.




The next step was the floor. I didn't want to do epoxy, too much prep and risk of peeling. I went with Nitro tiles so I could make my own design. They're also slip resistant and easy to clean. I did a blue outline to show where the cars go, inside that is checkerboard gray/black. The outer ring is gray. They have a diamond pattern which matches the cabinets.




Overall, they're decent. The install was fairly quick, but I won't lie it was a bitch. The being bent over part sucked most. They do NOT handle sunlight well, they warp. Luckily, only about the first foot of my garage gets sunlight. I took out the first row and will use a gray cement paint there. The GTO blew the water pump and hot coolant went ALL over the tiles. It just washed right off. No lasting effects from 200 degree coolant at all, no warping (once cooled), no stain, nothing.

Then I loaded up the cabinets. Here you can see the beer fridge and large storage cabinet I also got. You can also see where my work bench will go, right where the miter saw is.



I set up the tool chest next to the cabinets. I got a set of hooks off Amazon for like $20. One for the saw horses, one for the extension cord, and one for the smaller multi-ladder. The big one just sits on the floor.



The other side of the garage has some essentials such as the tankless water heaters (dual system), fire sprinkler access, and sprinkler control. As such, no cabinets there, but its a great spot for some hanging racks. This BlueHawk rack was only $15, and came in 4 pieces to span up to 65 inches. I used 2 pieces here for some essentials. I used another hook from that pack I bouught to set up the lawnmower/bag. It saves a couple square feet hanging it like this, and real estate is at a premium in this 2 car garage.



The rest of that wall was for decor. Yup, I'm a Cowboys fan. It also had a good spot to hang bikes (well, 1 bike for now).




The entryway proved to be a perfect spot to hang the OEM GTO spoiler. The blue line flag was only $6 on amazon. Low quality, but just fine for indoors. That cubby under the flag is HUGE, about 5 feet deep.



Next to the flag is another spot for cleaning items, but with a Batman touch.



The final step was a trip to the dump. I loaded up the truck with all the junk, strapped it down tight, and took off. It was a few hundred pounds in total.



That's all for now. I'm out for a bit with a hand injury from work, but when I recover I have a few more things to do.

-make the work bench
-install motion sensor light switches
-make cabinet doors for the cubby area under the flag (it's about 5 feet deep)
-carpet the stairs
-add a shoe rack at the stairs
-more decor, perhaps
-paint, maybe lol

yup, its the fridge from my old house. Our new house already had one, so I knew exactly what to do with this one! lol. Conveviently right next to where the work bench will be ;p

 

Man I want to do tile flooring in my garage sooo bad but I have an 800 sqft garage and it would cost me WAY more than I could ever talk my wife into.

 

I wish mine was that size! Mine is just around 400. The floor ran around $900 (roughly $2 a sq foot plus tax). I went with the lowest option, these can't handle jack stand unless you put some plywood under them which is no big deal for me. The higher end tiles are $3-4 a sq foot. My wife didn't fight the expense at all, she knew I wanted something for me after building her a dream closet lol
