New truck wont go into 4wd low

I posted this in another thread and didn't get any results, i did do a search which wasn't very helpful. I will call the dealer in the AM if I don't figure it out. I just took my GF for her first ride in my new truck, I was all excited to show her what 4wd low range was like, you know make the taco do some crawling up a dirt hill and stuff. I pushed the clutch in (all the way down) shifted it into 4wd Hi, pushed the switch in a little, and turned it to 4wd low.......beep beep beep beep wtf? Anyone have this problem? I read the manual I did everything correctly. I went from forward to reverse drove around and everything.............beep beep WTF????

 

were you stopped?

 

It may be an ESO problem . But I'm not sure how the manuals go into 4 low, I have and automatic.

 

That is what I have always heard as well.

 

Are you sure that it went into 4wd first before you tried to go to 4low ? you might try to drive a little in 4wd then try to shift to 4low. My transfer case was a little stubborn when new, they do work a lot smoother with some use.

 

usually want to engage and drive alittle inbetween the settings of 2wd/4hi/4lo
to engage 4lo, stop, put in neutral, then select. if it doesnt engage, put in gear and roll slightly back or forth usually does the trick.

 

I was stopped thanks guys Im going to try again when I leave my GF's house tonight I have a steep dirt driveway I will try it when I get home. New Mexico thanks if I have any problems I will PM you. Hearing that other people had stubborn new transfer cases is reassuring I will update you guys tomorrow.

 

I'd say pull that handy card out of the sun visor and follow it step for step and if that doesn't work, head to the dealership.

 

I was hoping to come in here and tell you that all you had to do was push the knob in a little, but I guess that won't help. Rats.

 

You need to make sure the clutch is pushed ALL the way in. I (thought) had problems with my 4lo for a while, turns out i wasn't pushing the clutch to the full extent and that was why it wouldn't disengage.

 

I am not alone! This happened to me as well make sure the floormat is not in the way, clutch is pushed thru the floor and mine worked after that. I have an 08 and it will go from 2h to 4lo with no need to drive around.

 

If you are having problems getting it too engage, just be aware it will most likely also cause problems when you try to disengage, I know mine does.

If all else fails this is the one trick that works for me.

If you get nothing but the beeping after several attempts Turn the little piece of shit selector knob to the desired function and shut off the truck for a few minutes, when you restart it many times it will be doing what the arrow on the little piece of shit knob symbol says it is supposed to be doing.

 

I had the same problem. It wouldn't go into 4wd low, and when it finally did, I couldn't get it back out. I drove around a snowy parking lot at the VA for an hour stopping and trying...had the manual out and was doing everything right. Turns out, my after-market floor mats (only about 3/16" thick were the reason. The manual says to depress the clutch "all the way"....they mean ALL THE WAY!

 

I came home put it in 4 hi at the end of my driveway drove up the driveway at the top I stopped pressed in the clutch switched it to 4low......Beep beep beep. I said fuck this parked the truck and now I'm going to bed. Tomorrow after work I will asses my floor mat situation. I think I am pressing the clutch in all the way, I am hoping once it goes into 4low it comes back out. I can't understand why my factory floor mats would get in the way when they are factory and hooked in there two little spots to hold them in place. Idk it's kind of pissing me off now, I'll hold off on yelling at the dealership I want to make sure I'm not being an ass and doing something wrong first.

 

Both my '09 (manual) and '10 (auto) were stubborn when I first got them. Took a few trys back and forth to get the transfer case to shift. But after going back and forth between 4hi and 4lo a few times, shifted fine. Definitely have to have the clutch in, definitely have to be in 4hi, definitely have to be stopped.

 

I had the same problem with my truck, and mine is an auto. I was stopped, in neutral and turned the knob all the way to 4 lo. It started beeping and raising hell. I then put it in drive and let off the brake, to see if it would engage, and it suddenly did and it made a horrible banging/grinding noise. I put it back in neutral, then 2wd.

Moral of the story: I think you have to engage 4hi first, then go to neutral, then to 4lo. Once I did that there were no beeps, and it went in smoothly.

 

My goal after I get out of work is to go home and get my truck in 4 low lol I will try everything.

 

i had the same problem with my 4cyl 5 speed. you have to be stopped and already in 4 hi. i litterally have to stand on my clutch for it to go into 4 low and make sure there is not a floor mat under it. try adjusting your clutch which is my weekend project.

 

Well it works, and it works perfectly. I was doing something wrong, you guys helped me out big time thank you very much.
