Last May I bicycled up to FPK on my gravel bike via the Union Springs route. Probably not the best decision I have ever made. It turned into a lot of hike-a-bike. We camped up there and even had to put up with a little snow. The view was amazing.

I wouldn't want to pedal up, but if I still had my downhill bike, blasting down would be awesome.

My buddy just got rid of his 2016 tundra. He said he was only getting 10-12 mpg's. Are they really that bad?

I used to have a Tundra, before I traded it for the 4Runner which I traded for the Taco. I used to average 15 mpg. it was consistent.

I wanted a better answer to this question than mine for Danny so I asked my buddy in New Mexico, that uses his Tundra a lot more than I ever used mine in a greater variety of things. This is what he said:

    MPGs range from 6 pulling into 40mph winds....to 14mpg with a 40mph tailwind

we average I would guess 11mpg

The best MPGs I have had on a single tank was with zero loads/trailers and no short trips of 20mpg

but in mixed use I average 16mpg

The toy hauler can range from 7k lbs with just water and basic camping gear to almost 9k with 3 ATVs and all sorts of extra crap

So far I'm getting 16-17. Just went to College Park to pick up a fridge. Averaged 17 round trip.

That's pretty fantastic info. My main reason for getting a fill size was towing my boat. The Taco could do it, but it complained a lot. It wasn't stopping and going. It was it's rear suspension just was not up to the task. Couldn't control the load and the boat is well within the Tacoma's limits.

Yea, his toy hauler is a lot taller than the truck so that matters, your boat will not have the same impact I am sure.

Yup, that's when my MPGs went down. When I added the larger A/Ts.

You're right. My boat is taller than the truck but there isn't a bunch of surface area up there .

Well, it's still a lot, I've seen your boat (pic) and boats do sit up high naturally because they are on a trailer, but the front is not flat, vertical, so you will have some aerodynamics going on in your favor. When I was towing with mine it was a Bendron Titan V nose 18' tandem axle and the front 3 or 4 feet of the roof was angled down to help. All told it was about 4.5k with the trike and gear in it for bike week and I never knew it was back there. That Tundra will tow the hell outta things like no tomorrow!

That's super reassuring. My boat, on paper, is about 5k fully loaded with gear and fuel on the trailer. I don't think it will tow quite as nice as the 2500 Duramax high country I brought the boat home with but I'm sure it will be leagues better than the tacoma. I am going to miss my Tacoma though. I was a big fan of it for everything except towing....but I tow most weekends in summer.
