A repeaters is a tower that acts like a more powerful radio. To keep it simple, our radios are low to the ground and low power. So you call to the tower, which then will relay your message on higher power and normally from a location with more reach.

I'm in Nashua and the repeaters here hits rt 2 to Concord NH, and can be hit with a low power handheld and magnetic roof top antenna.

Late to the party. I've said it before and I'll say it again, imo you don't need a test to use a more powerful cb. Back in the day when people were building their own radios you could put out some serious wattage and harm private/ commercial/ .gov equipment. With a handheld unit off Amazon that's not gonna happen. All you really need to know is don't transmit on .gov/ leo/ first reaponder frequencies.
