Agreed, if it's a single piston that's binding you should be able to move the crank one way or the other. Can you see enough to check if all the connecting rods look straight. I can see some in the photos but not all.

Do you have all the caps off yet? When you do try to turn. If not see if you can light push the pistons to move at all. Not much. Just a little.

Some engines do, others rely on different methods. It makes it easy. I'm surprised at the rods not having studs. I guess because of low revving engine? Most higher strung ones have nuts on the outside where you're working.

And then those beefy mains....surprising is all.

Oh, unfortunately, those bolts are torque to yield...crap.

If the pistons move easily, you might not have to pull heads.

    Is #1 rod journal blueish?

That would mean it got hot.

We also haven't seen anything of #3's rod.
    It could be a pretzel.

Man, you just never know what you'll find in a 'ran when parked' vehicle.

Just a little tip since you will have thst apart for awhile. If you have empty egg cartons they are great for keeping parts in order like your caps. Also easy to move around when needed. Other small parts like oil pan bolts etc, put in Ziploc bags and lable with perm marker. Sure makes things easier to find when putting back together...

Not saying that i would do this...but i once had a shop teacher put 24 volts to the starter of a seized engine, that got it spinning again, lol.

Im eager to see the outcome of all this. just read the thread straight through.

oh and to the guys that were talkinga bout taking off Honda crank bolts. im a honda tech, and they are a son of a bitch getting off. we used to use a 5 foot breaker bar and the crank pulley holder tool that sits in the crank pulley and against the frame. dont need it anymore as my airgun is 1200 ft lbs reverse torque and a Lisle Crank Bolt Socket does the trick everytime.

One of my favorite tricks is a piece of cardboard with holes poked in it. I pick a start bolt, mark an X-> on the part and cardboard, and place the bolts in their spot. Makes it tough to forget where stuff goes.

similar we used foam or boxes for panels/windows etc when removing/install on aircraft when I was active duty. Because 99% of the time there was always a handful of different length bolts on a panel that should only have one set length...lol

I do it that way sometimes too. Don't always have egg cartons...

Im thinking something like this....and still say it shouldnt need a big breaker bar to turn a 160K engine...theres something between the heads and piston holding it up. [IMG]

Yep, I remember those days when a 12x12 panel had 50 countersunk screws and half of them were a PIA to get loose.

so I was watching this young Airman put a panel on...as he gets down to the end and the last few screws, I see him crank the screws down and snap., click click click. I was like wth are you doing? he says tightening them till they click! I said you idiot you just broke the nutplate! How many did you do that to? he says all of them...he was about 3 dozen screws into the panel...:facepalm:I said just stop. you have to take the whole thing off now...

Yep, there are a few that never should have been working on multi million dollar aircraft, or any aircraft, but we're jyst doing what they were told. Had the book smarts just not the mechanical knowhow..:notsure:

He can look at the valves up top and see if any are stuck down, the cams are out....I think.

Nick does #3 rod have that #39 painted on it?

Going back to early pics, that thing sure looked bent.
