We don't include this step because it is not required. To install the gas springs on the bracket, you simply push them on the ball stud. Sometimes it may be a little more difficult as there may be extra thick powder coating on the ball, but if you rock the gas spring while pushing them on they will snap on. You can use the method you described, but more often than not the customer will end up damaging the end fitting by pulling the c-clip out too far.

Mine would absolutely not go in. I don’t see how they can get damaged if that’s the method you use to remove them...I’m sure they’re not throw away cylinders after one removal but thanks for the clarification. I saw more harm to be done pushing them in as some where impossible...

I'm on my second Tacoma with these and if you don't have them yet, this is a simple, inexpensive mod made with high quality components that produce an immediate sense of gratification. Literally, you open the box, follow the instructions, and then open and shut your hood with a big chit-eating grin in about 1/2 an hour.

Also, I was unaware that they made a replacement hardware kit- I could've moved my first pair over to the next truck. Keep this in mind- another reason to buy them. They will move from truck to truck.

Just installed mine, only issue was a few of the holes in the brackets were too small to allow the rivet to pass through. Simple fix and it still took less than 30 minutes.

    Ordered. Now the wait.

    Thanks for the GB @RedlineTuning

Gonna sub the pop rivets for real blind rivets.
Anyone who’s scared of tape not being enough to stop the drill bit is pushing wayyy too hard. Use a sharp drill bit. If your not getting longish curls of steel you’re pushing too hard or spinning too fast.

I'm confused. What's the difference between a Blind Rivet and the rivets that come with the kit?

Edit - just looked on Wikipedia and it says that what come with the kit are Blind Rivets and the term Pop Rivet is just a common description for them.

It goes on and on but this is the main excerpt.

Pop rivets are “commercial” blind rivets.
Nothing wrong with them, they usually do the job they were intended to do.

I work in aerospace so I have access to somewhat fancier fasteners. That being said, so can you if you know what to look for.

What size are the rivets that come in the kit?

3/16" come with the kit. They are steel, not aluminum. Thanks.

Ooof! That’s heavier duty than I expected! That makes me happy. If steel pop rivs are supplied I don’t think I will swap those out.

But one could replace those with a monel cherrymax rivet.
CR3523-6-xx where xx is the grip length required in 1/16th’s (ie if the total stack up of material you are riveting together is 1/8” then your required grip length is -02)
However you need a cherrymax gun to properly pull a cherrymax rivet.

Cool! I always appreciate the abundance of knowledge on this site and welcome learning anything new.

And yea, definitely steel. As a matter of fact, a lot of guys confess great difficulty using an average, smaller, single hand gun designed for the more common aluminum rivet. I have one but bought the heavy duty, two handed lever type at Harbor Freight just to be sure I could maintain as tight a connection as possible.

    Thanks for the info again!

Not surprised at some having difficulty with the little hand pullers on a 3/16 steel pop riv. That’s definitely the max capacity for those little guns.
Watch that your fingers don’t end up in between the handles. Don’t ask me how I know!

Thanks for the tip, and the drilling tip as well. I thought I read slower was better. I bought new bits as well just for this mod. The 3/16" and two sizes smaller, 3/32" & 1/8" thinking as someone suggested to drill a pilot hole then step up to the final size. Yes, I'm definitely OCD most of the time. LOL
