I used a laser thermometer and measured the temp of the outside of the piping at several points after the merge. Most of the readings were around 150 at idle.

At the tip, the measurement was about 150 as well. But I pointed the laser at an angle through and past the exhaust tip at the inside wall and it measured 275.

This is at idle. At the RPM/Load I’m looking to reduce drone, (highway speeds, accelerating, etc) I would assume the temps would be quite a bit higher. Any guesses how much higher? I watched a YouTube video where a guy made a Helmz for his F-150 and he used a temperature value of 600*.

Thoughts? Curious if it would be worth adding an EGT probe temporarily and drive it around for a week or so to get an average value.

Think that's the way. Unless you can get someone in the bed to hang over and use the laser pointer at speeds.

What rpm are you looking at? My ultragauge gives me the temp my o2 sensors read. I have the cats on the headers so not sure if that makes it hotter or not but maybe could get you a closer ballpark?

WOT your exhaust gas will be over 1000. I don't think 600 is bad for part throttle. Ever watch a dyno test where the headers glow red? I looked up my ultragauge too and saw that cat converter reading. Never paid attention to it.

I can't leave anything well enough alone
I'm not positive, but I think that WOT may not even be the hottest of the exhaust gas. Most fuel burned, yes, but it will be in open loop and a significantly richer mixture. Under load, but just before the ECU switches to open loop, while still in Closed Loop and targeting 14.7 will be your hottest exhaust temp. And that may be very close to the load seen when driving on the highway with larger tires, loaded up, etc. I notice my ECU switches in and out of open loop on the highway at 75 when all loaded up, especially at elevation. But if I were building a hemholtz, I would assume a temperature of between 600 and 800, assuming you want it to be most effective when you are on the gas with some load, and it isn't a very low throttle and/or deceleration drone you are looking to cancel out.

Right, it’s louder under load, accelerating, and at highway speed 65+ MPH. Light throttle and most lower speed cruising it is fine.

I ordered an EGT guage kit so I’ll set that up and see what the temps look like. Not planning to keep the guage mounted permanently. I’ll just hook it up for testing and then I’ll put a plug in the bung once I’m done with it.

Too much discussion of the Helmholtz resonator to backtrack, but what is the point of taking exhaust gas readings or even getting the right temperature? If you use larger piping after the muffler (venturi effect in play) there would theoretically be less heat build up. Unless there is something I am missing here?

I've seen the mod before, but I saw it done in NA GTSlow's, never once did I see a mention about temps though.

In the formula used to calculate the frequency that a Helmholtz will cancel out, one of the variables needed is speed of sound. One of the variables used for an accurate calculation of speed of sound is temperature.

So you need to know the temperature of the exhaust that is flowing through the pipe.

I posted links to an online Helmholtz calculator a few posts back. When you plug in your a proposed pipe cross-section and pipe length for a certain frequency, the calculator gives a recommended cavity volume. Changing the temperature in one direction or another makes the cavity volume change as well.
