Maybe you need lessons on how to drive....an automatic.

Interesting theory.....not based on reality....but interesting

I'm not the one who spins out on obsticles.

Purpose built rock crawlers, mud trucks, etc, will be autos 99 times in 100. Sticks are for mall lots.....

    Because autos just perform better.

    I've owned 9 4wds with sticks.
    8 with autos.
    No more clutches. Never again.

    I'll bite.

Can't stand the auto in my 1st gen. Doing most crawling is actually better with the auto, but it doesn't work well with the way I like to drive literally everything else.

2nd gen auto, eh. still prefer MT for how I like to drive, but the throttle hang on these MT's bothers the shit out of me.

3rd gen auto hurts me in so many ways and I don't understand why they are even made with the way they have been tuned.

Some people like sticks....Reminds 'em of holding their dick....Or someone else's....

3rd gen is a mistake in any incarnation from what I see of them. Toyota tossed the magic out the window. Too many irritating changes from what made 'em popular.

I've had both...And I've had both in Tacoma's....Like 'em both for different reasons. Much prefer auto's for the type of wheeling I like to do (hills/rocks) With lock up converters (that Toyota's have had for years now) you put 'em in lower gears and you have engine braking. Some asshats leave 'em in drive. Operator error, not transmission problem. Like it or not, 99% of my miles are to/from work. Like the auto in traffic by a HUGE margin.

LOVE fucking with those easily fucked with, MT or Auto owners.

    Oh...
    I wanted to argue :(

Put a glove on the end of the selector and hold hands.

Most of the worlds AT's so far have much lower net wheel tq than their accompanying MT options largely due to gearing... except while in converter acceleration, but the wheel speed range of that additional reduction is very small, and makes the acceleration experience much less pleasant due to the temporary TQ increase after some up shifts. However modern "AT's" get better and better and better, now that AT's have similar reduction ratios and quantities, they are often much quicker than the MT due to the speed of shifts and the TQ converter smoothing the wheel tq curve while shifting, resulting in greater net wheel tq.

Many of the things that people don't like about the AT's are their shift logic... which is why many people use manual valve bodies when they build sweet machines with an AT, unless its a large team of engineers developing all the logic...

Autos are boring to drive. Plus, the whole point is moot on trails anyway because 4L basically makes a manual into an auto, so for crawling-speed stuff it's all the same.

And not that it matters, but I still prefer the way 3rd gens look compared to 2nd gens. Aside from the engine it's 90% the same truck

I'm not a "crawler", yet. So the manual trans is just fine for what our group does.

I enjoy a debate too. Just not one that is purely opinion-heavy only.

I like the ability to select low range, put it in the gear I choose and it stays there! No up or down shifting. 3rd gear 4lo is 3rd gear 4lo, not 2nd 4lo or 1st 4lo. 3rd gear 4 lo.
That Youtube video talks about just this thing. Granted that fella drives a manual and he may be slightly biased in my favor :)

    ^^ Logic Problem

Most AT logic and logic modes upshift for fuel economy, which adds to the delay from when you ask for wheel TQ and when you get the Wheel TQ you want.

Maybe Toyota needs to add "sport mode" logic and paddles to 3rd gen tacos?
And fix the damn tune so they get the extra 20 ftlbs and 30HP they deserve!! (and are capable of based on other 2GR performance numbers)

Will you all just kiss and make up already @Bluegrass Taco @dirty deeds. Both have their goods and bads, anyone that says one is way better than the other doesn't know what they're talking about.

I'd prefer a standard myself until I'm on the side of a sketchy hillside about to stall, having a hard time climbing, then give me auto. Or driving in the woods drinking beer, then give me auto as well.

2nd gen front ends look like theyre straight out of 1995. The 'dark ages' of car styling. Either make it look like an early 90s cruiser, which is timeless, or make it look modern.

I prefer the 2nd gen front end over the huge catfish looking front end on a small truck. Now if you beef the 3rd gen up with lift and tires then it doesn't make it look as bad. Just my opinion though.

3rd gens look like compliance with NHSA crash requirements and not a lot more.

Which is what the changes were all about.
