Now that I’m actually getting out there I’m finding that the Tom Harrison trail map I use for hiking is inadequate. What are you all using?

Gaia GPS and Backcountry Navigator are the usual Apps. I use BCN because I like the menu system better but many prefer Gaia. Gaia is a yearly subscription, BCN is a one time buy.

I use Gaia also. it doesn't always show the road/trail I'm on, but at least it leaves me bread crumbs to follow to get out and back home.

OK, solved it. I have, for some reason, two Gaia apps on my phone. the one I was using the other day just had the OpenStreetMap. The other one has USGS Topo and this has the detail I was missing.

Shoot. I’m still using a early 90’s USDF Stanislaus map..

Lots of roads don’t show up on the newer ones.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
I use OnX Hunt. It's like $25 per year. Shows trails (even indicates steepness of hiking trails), roads (indicates different road surfaces)... and gives me property ownership info (I.E. BLM, Nat Forest, Nat Park, private, etc)

You can use sat image, multiple topo choices, current fires, historic fire locations and a bunch more... and it works off line off of satellite signal, on your phone or tablet.

@nDub I have one of those from 1962, but it was a gift and getting very fragile. I don't think I would take that out on a trail.
@Uphillshunter @FrieightPusher that sound interesting. I will check it out.
