Just in case anyone wants to ever buy a set of All-Pro bed bars with the $20 Hi-Lift mounts that you can get added on and then try and mount a RTT.... here is what you get...

Heading to Yellowstone this weekend for my first trip w/ the Tepui. It will be raining pretty good. Any tips on staying dry? Will my Kukenam Ruggedized hold up well to 5 nights of rain and thunderstorms?

Scored a hardshell Free Spirit on CL for $500 from a retired dude who couldnt get it on the roof of his suburban anymore. He was surprised someone would drive three hours to buy it. I still have a Tepui Ayer still in the box from the last REI sale too. Gotta love that return policy.

OK, I’m about to throw in my 2 cents on RTT’s. About 75% of ALL RTT’s are made in one of three factories in China. They change the names to suit the vendors. Very few are reflect quality. Poor workmanship, poor materials and lots of problems around leaky seams. You get what you pay for. If you want a no problem RTT, look to manufacturers in South Africa or Australia. There are a couple in Oregon too. Believe me when I say stay away from the under $1000. Tents they are crap.

I did a lot of research on RTTs particularly ones $1k or under (I'm not made of money over here..)..and honestly the only brand that had a negative review base overall was the Yakima RTTs. Many of the same complaints across many review platforms. That's the only one I'd avoid and they do sell them at REI.

My Tuff Stuff was $800 with the cash in person discount, and although I've only had it a couple months it seems to be a great quality tent. Used it a few times including a 4 night desert trip and zero complaints from me. I wouldn't generalize all <$1k tents as being "poor quality". That's still a good chunk of change for a tent and it's not unrealistic to expect good quality out of something your dropping that kind of money on.

While there may be different brands that come from the same facilities in China, that does not mean that all the tents are made the same. That's like saying if you go to Subway, the only sandwich you can buy is a crappy peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Factories have different material choices, different tiers of workmanship, different levels of quality control etc. all of which are determined by the end retailer and what they are willing to pay for. In all honesty it really doesn't matter where something is made anymore. There are high quality options available anywhere and there are low quality options available too. South Africa, Australia, the US or anywhere else don't have a monopoly on quality materials and workmanship. It's all driven by money. It is definitely a get what you pay for situation. FWIW, 99% of the tents people think are from Australia are made in China. ;) In the case of Tepui, there is a valid reason they cost more than a Smittybuilt or Tough Country tent even if the country of origin is the same. Tepui as a brand is willing to pay for a better product made of better materials and provide better warranty and service. Customers that value that pay more knowing what goes into it.

I agree, it's a good rule of thumb to steer clear of the sub-$1000 tents.
