Not sure if it's in your budget but if you plan on doing a rebuild I would invest in an engine stand. You can find them for about $75 bucks for a 1000lb stand. Or barrow one if you know anyone. Will make things a lot easier for you.

Dang. It still doesn't look so rusted as to not be able to budge.

Yep. Seems to have blown a head gasket on the driver's side. Just wipe it out and pull those rods and pistons out, it'll need honing anyway.

#3 rod was straight as an arrow with that shot.

    Some things to consider:

Well, the bottom end was in shape if that's any consolation. I guess he had dumped stuff into it to free it up and had no luck. (the smell)
It's going to be up to you if you want to put money in parts or get another junkyard engine. Moneywise, it'll prob. be a wash, with the chance being on what kind of engine you come up with and whether you trust it to be better.

You could get by with rings (most lkely), full set of gaskets and......I don't know right now. I'm tired too. Oh, head(s) decked.

don't mix up those valve shims just yet 'til you make a decision.

If I had a line on an engine I trusted, I'd prob. go that route.

If there's a rust ring in a bore that necessitates a bore job that would be a clincher. Pistons and a bore would cost a bit. This is where imports get you, parts are expensive. You can buy chevy pistons by the set all day cheaper than 1 or 2 import pistons. Someone may make a good kit, I don't know off hand.

Bummer, was hoping it would be something easily repairable, those don’t look good.

What about something like this? MY cost on a used motor with 125k is around $250066C27F3A-2480-402E-A27A-4B01FC0BA30A.jpg

The rust is excessive, That amount of rust would cause the engine not to turn. Question now for me is where did all that moisture come from? Blown head gaskets? :spy:. The bottom end looked pretty good. The plot thickens. :pccoffee:.

Yea, previous answer is 'tired old man' talking.

Seeing how you tore this apart, putting one back is not above your pay grade and the machine shop tells you what sizes of what you'll need.

Not to mention you won't be hung out when you have the forum to fall back on.

I believe the truck blew a headgasket, not in a flood.

Now..... what did the coolant look like when you drained it?

    That may be the answer.

While that can be done if everything else is good after you get the pistons out, you still need machine shop work to have done to do it right.

Man. I've seen a lot worse rust than that break free after MMO.

I mean pits and scores all over the walls.

Like I mentioned before, they ran like crap after getting them running (usually) but breaking them free wasn't a problem.

It was also mentioned before that flood cars smell, why would he clean the interior and undercarriage carefully and not blow the water out of the engine?

500 for the rebuild kit, maybe a little cheaper at a shop, maybe a few bucks more. Probably another 500ish for them to clean, test, deck the heads and install. After that you will have an almost brand new engine, good for another 100 thou.

All true. I don't even know what machine shop rates are there or if you even know a 'good one'.

I bet you could find an engine cheaper than 2500, although for that, I'd expect an excellent one, ready to drop in.

Can you get pics of both sides of each head gasket when you get a chance?

You don't know yet if you need pistons. I doubt those are of great quality. A good set of pistons cost more than that.

I think you'll need to hone, @Loxsl honed his out on his 2TR-FE here. If they are too bad, you could always get it resleeved, but that's probably costly. I don't have much experience. I had my Pontiac GA blow the head gasket and I had the head resurfaced and replaced all the gaskets myself for a grand total of $800. You could probably get it all done for the same, though yours may need some more work in its current condition. The awesome part though is if you rebuild it yourself, you'll learn a ton about the engine, and have peace of mind that you are now capable of fixing it and you also know that (perhaps with some help here) you did it right.

This is also an option, though might be a bit pricey depending on where you get the donor.

I will pass on the v8 swap. I have a machine shop that can do it as for cost wise I’m not sure I will have to talk to a guy at work that drop his crank of to have it turned and test his block. He said they been doing this stuff for 30 plus years
