I would have cut it out but the only power tools I have is a drill. Probably should pick up an angle grinder or sawzall and an impact wrench but I make do. Didn't think of the hacksaw though. I do have one of those haha

Back roads were the sweet spot on my F150 as well. On a back-roads-only cruise with the transmission up to temp I got as high as 27-28mpg a couple of times, driving from my house to the mountains and back.
Even the Ram does well in that scenario, though, nearly 17mpg average for the same sort of trip. Which is outstanding for a 2500 with aggressive tires and the aerodynamic properties of a chipped brick. But if I get on the throttle at all to listen to Hemi noises we're back down around 14-15, lol.

Planned the route via GAIA GPS. They have the Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Maps on their for the premium memberships, which got me in and around the Forest itself. Then did my best to pick routes to get to and from each of those roads on the more scenic dirt backroads. Now that I know where a few of the class 4 roads are I need to do some digging into the pdf maps for them- I think you need to find them town by town though.

I don't have a power outlet in my driveway near where I work on my truck so I tend to look for hand tools first. Plus, I don't like sending sparks and metal shavings flying near my truck so I usually avoid the angle grinder. Things can go very wrong, very quickly with that tool if you're not careful.
Not bad! I'm settling in around 15 MPG on my daily commute now. Traffic seems like it's been really bad the last 2 weeks so lots of stop and go. I average 17 on the way in and 14 on the way home (and the trip home takes twice as long). I can get 17 on the flat highway runs, once I hit the Berkshires, I drop a little bit.

Yeah, I my instant read-out is usually between 16-18 on the flat stretches of highway, but they're few and far between so it's tough to get a baseline for highway travel. For instance, the trip TO Somersworth the other night to get the cap was more downhill than up, so I averaged almost 18mpg's on the way down. But on the way back, it was more uphill than down, and by the time I got home the average had settled back down at 15.5

Since my commute is pretty short, the transmission doesn't have a chance to completely warm up, so most of my travel to and from work seems to fall into the 14-15mpg range.

I average about 22-24 MPGs on my commute. 20 miles all backroads with some traffic. The winter blend gas on the same commute I was getting 17-19.

I've been averaging 20 mpg lately. Winter was 17. That's on stock tire size and driving like a granny. My commute is half highway and half city, about 54 miles round trip.

One pleasant surprise about the Ram, on a side note, is that apparently they still include the wiring for a cap. I took a peek under there last night and there's 3 taped-off wire stubs right next to the spare tire that apparently are a 3rd brake light wire, a hot wire, and a ground. So that should make wiring my cap in considerably easier than on the F150

What did you have to do on the F-150? Mine had a wire for the 3rd brake light but, stupidly, it was under the hood. I just had to run it to the back of the truck.

Same. But I couldn't find the wire stub they supposedly provided, even after a LOT of searching and tracing wiring, so I just spliced in to the 3rd brake light wiring behind the driver's side kick plate in the cab. Then I routed it out through the firewall and into the frame, fished it all the way down the frame and up through the bed along the taillight wiring. A major PITA, but I hate exposed wiring. The interior light was easy; just hooked it up to the nearest frame ground and tapped into the power wire for the bed lights. Which was super convenient, because that way I could turn the cap light on or off either from inside the cab or from the tailgate.

Shrug. I can add it to my airbag clockspring recall, lol. Zero concerns; I almost never use Cruise Control, and if it for some reason got stuck in acceleration mode I'd just shift to neutral. :notsure:

Reminds me of the Toyota floor mat scandal; I never understood why all of these "unintended acceleration" morons didn't just shift into neutral.

Answered your own question haha. Yeah, I was more surprised at the number of vehicles they recalled.
