    2017 tacoma off road
Ok this is going to be long but here goes. I bought a 2017 tacoma trd off road 4x4 short bed from a friend. I have decided to move to Canada to permanently live there. The only problem is that I want to take the truck with me since it took along time and work to finally buy it (5 years). With all this said the way I bought it was through a friend who works in a mechanic shop. In the beginning he had bought the truck for himself with the help of his boss who is licensed to purchase salvaged cars from auctions in the USA. When the boss bought the truck he did it as a favor to my friend and did not charge him anything(other than the purchase of the vehicle) and because of this their was no paperwork given to my friend(such as auction paperwork) except the title which is salvaged. My friend fixed the truck and the paperwork(the boss fixed the papers) to be able to drive it in Texas. He was in need of a bigger truck and decided to sell it to me (as is) . I gave him straight cash and he passed the title to my name. So ok, with all that said I wanted to transport the truck to Canada and after researching I am confused with the Salvage title part. (1)If the title is salvaged can I take the truck with me or do they just not allow salvaged vehicles to enter, it also mentions that I must have a recall clearance sheet from the manufacture saying that the truck is up to standards and can be allowed to pass. (2) Does Toyota give recall clearance to salvaged trucks after the vehicle has been repaired? (3) Finally if everything goes well Canada Border taxes the vechicle based on the cost but since I payed my friend in cash their no paperwork to verify that I payed him that amount other that him and me knowing, so how can I go about showing that I payed x amount if their is no paper work. (4) Can i possibly go get it notarized even after the purchase was made already or how can I show what I paid to the Border, also he no longer works for the same mechanic so any paperwork regarding the purchase of the vehicle is in the mechanics hands and he has moved so I can't contact him. The truck was very cheap considering that it was in an accident and I know that if I don't take it I wont be able to buy one in Canada for the same price.I know this is a lot but I need another persons input anything is appreciated. Thank You

A certificate of title is proof of "equity ownership" in the vehicle. If you didn't pay the sale tax to have the right to title the vehicle in your name...it's not going across the border. Because of the motor vehicle theft of 1919 the only owner of a motor vehicle is the federal government...the state you title the vehicle in is the trustee for the federal government when all taxes are paid then you have the legal right to buy, sell, trade or assign the equity rights to that vehicle. In other words if you don't pay the taxes you don't own it your just a tenant! My advice is sell it because there will be more taxes to pay when you get to Canada.

Branded (salvaged) title vehicles legality vary from province to province. Ontario does not allow it, Quebec is more lenient and hence I will never buy a vehicle that has ever been registered in QC. Your looking at a real PITA attempting to do what you are looking to do.

My advice is sell it local...:canada:

Not an expert on this by any means but have a question...

OP - is the title in your name, with taxes paid to TX on value of the truck, and do you have plates in your name?

Most of our vehicle registration processes today comes from shipping...a certificate of title is a vessel if you place that document on water it will float and it’s cargo is information. Two types of law, the law of the land and the law of the water...can’t argue that case on land and expect to win..lol.
