    Hello friends,
Did anybody experienced air conditioner failure on 16-18 Tacomas?
My A/C decided to stop working today @90+ shore weather. Truck has only 14K miles, it is my weekend vehicle. It was working fine last week, but not today. I checked fuse OK, relay OK, refrigerant had pressure. Took it to dealer and they gave me BS answer that it has a leak... I checked both valves and there was pressure on both. Leak would be no pressure in the system.
Adviser asked to bring it back midweek when supervisor is there, since it is a newer truck and they do not have A/C specialist on Saturdays. Looks like AC compressor clutch is not engaging.
Wanted to check if anybody had same issue.

Wait so they sent you on your way with the disfunctional vehicle and told you to come back a few days from now?

Tough on Saturday on holiday weekend to find anything. Don't quote me, but I think there are two fuses for the AC. A 10A and a 50A and a relay.

Edit: Both are under the hood. 10A is position 1 and 50A is position 32. Hope this helps.

That's absolute crap. They are not out they just don't want to help. You need to be reaching out to Toyota themselves. A brand new truck should not fail on you when it's literally the last years model and they should be doing all they can to keep you a happy customer, at least until warranty is out!

My mother has a 2017 grand Cherokee that at 19k miles went dead in the water, thankfully a few miles from home and the dealership. Had it towed to the dealership, sweet talked the tow driver to take mand home to get the taco and went the next day to the dealer. They said the service isn't open on Sunday and wouldn't do anything. I waited for the manager and he told the guy, who said they won't give me a loaner, to get us a loaner vehicle off the lot. It was just a compass off the lot that they did a temp registration for.

I'm sorry but I'd be going back to your dealer and telling them they are giving a loaner as you need air conditioning because of the heat. Unless that's what you should expect out of a new truck from them. See if they budge.

Gets you in a vehicle with A/C. I'd say that will be greatly helpful.

If it was my only set of wheels I would have pushed harder. Monday I have to leave to Denver for work and my wife will bring it in. Adviser said if they cannot figure out that day they will give loaner then. My wife works 5 minutes from dealership. Will see what they will come up then. If they will not fix it or provide loaner their management will be hearing from me.

Just checked 50A fuse OK, I swapped relays earlier today and tested 10A fuse OK. Mechanic probably tested them too.

I must be misunderstanding then, he was told they were out of loaners, when in fact most dealers can and will give vehicles off the lot to drive in times of service repair need be done.

My post was reflecting on just how the dealer told me they won't give a loaner, and yet I spoke with a manager and they promptly gave one.

Sometimes you don't know what the dealer can do. Never told him to bitch about. Just reach out to Toyota corporate so they can be included on what is going on with the dealer not offering a loaner vehicle for what will most likely be warranty repair work.

We don't do diag on weekends, especially walk-in diag, but its rarely clarified, they would have been better off to tell you nothing at all.

Just because it has pressure doesn't mean it has enough pressure, if its at 40% charge it wont engage.

Doesn't the '17 use the 1234yf refrigerant? I don' think you will find a tool. Don't mess with it and give the dealer a reason to blame you for the failure.

I have owned a 2007, and 2012 tacoma both of those trucks have lost the A/C compressor the problem is the small o ring on the bottom of the condenser.
I called Toyota Canada and they told me that they never heard of this problem, the representative sais that she would issue a service memo but I never heard back from them. I now own a 2016 Tacoma and I am betting that I will be replacing the commpressor in my new truck.

Not true. There is a pressure switch in the system that protects the system from both high or low pressures. Much different than 'no' pressure.

    This ^

    This^.

And the fact that it seems you might not be clear on the basic design of AC systems, meaning no touchy is a good policy.

I do think it's a shame you even have a problem. Hopefully it's not damage (like a nip in the condensor) and that the repairs will be properly handled under your warranty when the staff arrives after the holiday.

(And it is ok that they get holidays. It's not like they are running an ER for people, right @Bishop84 ? )

This mentality is why is sucks so bad to work in the automotive industry. People want everything for free and RIGHT NOW. Sorry pal but a dealership has limited loaner cars, they’re not gonna just give away a new car for someone to drive for the weekend because their AC crapped out. And just because it’s a “brand new truck” doesn’t mean it won’t have minor failures occasionally. And if there aren’t any qualified AC techs working on Saturday that’s just the way it is. Technicians need days off too.

Right but any dealer worth their salt would have gotten him a rental from the local Enterprise or whatever so they could diag it as soon as they had a tech available. Granted we only hear one side of the story so if they suggested come by next week and OP was like "okay not a big deal I got other cars" then it is what it is.
Notice he said they ASKED him to come back when a AC specialist was available. He didn't say they told him to come back later. Just my .02

How does this cause the compressor to fail?

I see how it could be a problematic leak point and the system shut down, but not eat a compressor.

And if it was design flaw as you suggest, bridging at least from '07-'12, why is there not a pile of threads on the topic?

Not saying you didn't have an issue. Just trying to understand exactly what was happening.
